Without wishing to get political I see that the new situation the UK finds itself means buying a programme from abroad just became 20% more expensive on eBay...ouch

Wouldn't they be classed as magazines and zero rated?

That’s a Possible UK interpretation.

But clearly the EU sees it differently, and it’s their interpretation that applies here.

Bit over my head, does that mean selling as well as buying abroad or just buying from abroad ?

I believe it is levied on a purchase when buying items from European registered sellers.

Well if it is VAT then surely you have to be registered to charge it and so become an unpaid tax collector (as I was once) for what ever government in whatever country you live in?
Import tax/customs charges are a different matter and will invariably levied by companies according to their rates. I don't quite see buying a programme from say French Ebay for say £10 would be much worth bothering but I could be wrong if it all starts to get Brexit nasty?

From what I understand (and I am no expert in any way) it is eBay who collects the 20% on every purchase of any value from an EU registered seller to UK and visa versa. I don’t know if this will remain (lol) but not sure why this is the case when my understanding was the “deal” allowed tariff/tax free imports for certain goods? Oh well, I will “leave” it there

Sports programmes are zero rated for VAT

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/zero-rating-books-and-printed-matter-for-vat-notice-70110

BTW Why is this topic in > A programme from this day in history ? I do not see the connection.

The placement is my error I didn’t really think about it. That’s good news, it would ruin a whole section of the market and would be very difficult to deal with. Hopefully eBay sorts this out soon Smile

It's a fair point, football programmes / magazines / books should be zero rated shouldn't they?

It appears that eBay has fixed the issue of VAT being levied against football programmes from non-UK sellers.

I had emailed their UK MD a few days ago, and his office responded that their VAT team had fixed it.

Thanks for that. I notice that 20% still applies for tickets on sale from the EU. Is that correct?

I'm not a VAT expert so I'm not sure what category old ticket stubs would fall under. I know old stamps do attract a level of VAT.

I'd suggest finding out if tickets should be treated as VAT exempt (or 5% VAT) and emailing the eBay MD in the UK, you should get a response
