Inspired by two recent posts by RoddyN and Sharrowblade which both featured pre war Sheffield items, I wondered what the oldest international issues would be for other individual clubs? By international I mean not from the British Isles. I've had a bit of a browse on the Web and the ones I've listed are by no means definitive, just a starting point for other possible inclusions. So, in no particular order......

Copenhagen Select v SHEFFIELD UNITED (June 1936) (Sharrow's post)
Nicholson Wien v SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY (May 1932) (Roddy's post)
FC Zurich v EVERTON (May 1928)
Dutch Select XI v LEEDS (May 1950)
Udvlagt Hold v CHELSEA (May 1938)
Sparta Prague v WEST HAM (May 1923)
Preussen v CELTIC (May 1922 )
BAOR Combined Services v MAN UTD (March 1946)
HM Forces (RAF and Army combined issue) v LIVERPOOL (July 1945)
Slavia Prague v ABERDEEN (May 1911)
Grenland Select v RANGERS (May 1911)
Sparta Combined XI v BLACKBURN ROVERS (May 1928)
Sammenstatt Norsk Lag v MIDDLESBORO (May 1950)
Tennis Borussia v TOTTENHAM (May 1950)
Deutschland XI v ASTON VILLA (May 1938)(Berlin)
AIK Stockholm v BIRMINGHAM CITY (May 1946)
Fiorentina v MAN CITY (May 1934)
Racing Club Paris v ARSENAL (November 1935)
Real Madrid v FULHAM (May 1949)
Kamraterna v BURNLEY (May 1948)
Ferencvaros v OXFORD UNIVERSITY (March 1902)
Combined Services v WOLVES (September 1945)
Aalborg v BRISTOL CITY (June 1946)
Nurnberg v SUNDERLAND (May 1955) (Brooklyn)
Grasshoppers v PRESTON NORTH END (May 1946)
Kamraterna v NEWCASTLE UNITED (June 1952)
East Transvaal v DUNDEE (June 1953)
East Transvaal v HEARTS (June 1954)
Matebeland and Mashonaldland v MOTHERWELL (JUNE 1934) (Double issue)
PSV v HUDDERSFIELD (May 1951)
West Ham v DERBY COUNTY (Amsterdam) (May 1925)
FC Saarbruken v BLACKPOOL (May 1954)
Netherlands Select v BOLTON (May 1953)
FC Saarbruken v CHARLTON (May 1949)
Dundee v WEST BROMWICH ALBION (Toronto) (June 1959)

I've also had uncomfirmed reports of the existence of an AIK v Liverpool issue from May 1939 PLUS an AIK v ARSENAL issue from the early 30's?!

Like I said, not a definitive list, just a starting point for other vintage items

Interesting Topic!

Manchester United were apart from their early success in 1908 and 1911 League Division One Winners, 1909 English Cup Winners and in 1908 the first club to win the Charity Shield, so they were hot property back then and in 1908 the club embarked on their very first club tour abroad. After this period the team did very little either side of the Great War.

As you can see below from one of the players official club itinerary where they would go too and to whom they would play.

https://flic.kr/s/aHskgTgSDj

There are 2 brochures/magazines/bulletins call them what you will from Slavia Prague where United played twice with match preview and then reports and some photos of the game, no programme or team sheet has to my knowledge ever surfaced in the last 120 years.

Reports of the games in Prague speak of crowd disturbances with United players having bottles and stones thrown at them-well nothing has changed much since then, today it is just insults Laughing Laughing .

There was also a visit to Budapest to play Ferencvaros as well-United side won all the games on the Tour with "some ease" it was reported.

Hi Leslie

I was astounded when I could only find a POST war issue as the oldest Utd international away (from your collection of course) Do you have any knowledge of anything earlier?

For winning the FA Cup in 1934 Manchester City took their players on a 3 week holiday to France and Italy playing according to the players Itinerary just the one match versus Racing Club de Paris.

However, they did play 5 games in total and Paris-Florence, 2 in Nice and one in Marseille, I suppose that the local arrangements with the clubs abroad would take longer to deal with?

Surprising to see an Hotel in Nice in 1934 called the "O'Connor"! must have been an Irish pub as well back then!

Also the following year City went back into Europe and played t least one match in Austria v FK.

Some images for you to view

Jim

As I had mentioned earlier United's halcyon days were 1908-11 thereafter it all went down the pan. The Great War interrupted it all of course and then on resumption United started back in Division 1 in 1918-19, relegated to Division 2 in 1921-2, Runners up in 1924-5, but in 1927 a Tour was arranged to go to play 6 matches in Switzerland which United won 5 and lost just the one, there has been nothing turned up for that Tour in private hands to my knowledge, but I suspect there will be something in the archive at Manchester United-if they do have anything you can be well assured it will not probably be on display as fans going in want to see the treasures from Giggs, Ronaldo-Rooney- ect ect. There was also a 2 match Tour to Germany at the end of season 1928-9 but the same again other than who they played there is little if anything in private hands to confirm it all.
United were relegated again in 1930-1, Champions of the 2nd Division in 1935-6, Relegated in 1936-7[the season City won the League], Runners Up in 1937-8[City Relegated after being Champions the season before and that is Still a Record!] then WW2 came...

United were 1 match away from the 3rd Division in 1934 having to win at Millwall on the last game of the season as defeat for either would send them down, United won 2-0 Millwall dropped.

United were skint in the early 1930's and on occasions had not enough to pay the wages or the travelling fees so to answer you question there were no invites from other clubs to see this "nothing" club going no where!, then in 1945 Matt Busby arrived.....

Just another Northern grimy club were United, Manchester City were the team to beat in the 1930's and also today but without the cash injection they would be in the football wilderness like United were in those far away days.

Here’s one for fans of Preston NE on a tour of Switzerland in May 1913, following in the steps of Manchester United a few years earlier.

They are all postcards in an album.

Opponents included Young Fellows Zurich, and a Young Fellows 2nd XI.

See below..

HI
There were supposed to have been programmes issued for Rangers American tour matches against Illinois All Stars on 20/6/1928 & American All Stars on 23/6/1928. However haven't seen any photos/scans etc so have included a scan of a scan of a copy of a programme from the next US tour in 1930. This was against the Detroit All Stars on 18 June 1930.

Been having another mooch on the interweb and have spoken to a few people. The original list is now updated to include the following teams

Tottenham
Aston Villa
Birmingham City
Manchester City
Burnley
Arsenal
Fulham
West Ham Utd
Middlesboro
Blackburn Rovers
Derby County
Tottenham
Sheffield Wednesday (Nicholson Wien, NOT Ajax!)

I’m fairly sure that there must be older issues for certain clubs, if anyone can add?

This is actually the oldest LFC issue so far. A double issue versus the HM Forces played in Celle and Hannover in July 1945. The Baltimore issue I had up originally was 11months later! Smile

If Oxford University counts too, possibly their oldest away issue is from 1902 against Ferencváros in Budapest.
