Talking of red covers.............
Sat 27th April 1974
Swindon Town v Crystal Palace
Gate: 11,964 Result: 0-1 (P Taylor)
Under Malcolm Allison, Palace had a terrible season but had enough talent in the side to rally after Xmas, and while not winning a game at all until November 10th, had done enough thereafter to arrive at this game, Palace's penultimate, needing to beat already-relegated Swindon to have a chance of staying up. Win they did, but did they stay up after all? Check in on 30th to find out!

You are leaving us with a proper cliffhanger there Pete. Will be on tenterhooks until the 30th.
I was going to put up Carlisle v Villa also on 27 April 1974 but I can’t put my hands on it. Carlisle won 2 nil to move into the third promotion place, but would lose out if Orient could beat Villa a few days later. Fortunately, Villa held out for a 1 1 draw and Carlisle went up.
As I can’t find the Carlisle v Villa here is a red cover that I meant to put up a couple of days ago but forgot 25 April 31 Palace v Bournemouth- a great cover with good content. My photography probably doesn’t do the colour justice.

27 April 1946 “ Another attractive match”
Workington v South Shields. The programme notes make reference to the fact that Workington would be playing 5 games in 8 days to bring the season to a close including 2 away trips.

Keeping with the promotion theme of today:
April 27th 1971
Considered by many to be the finest game seen at Bramall Lane
It was us or them
United 5 Cardiff City 1
The game fetched record receipts of just over £11,000 and put United a point away from promotion

Hi Sharrow
Your post has made me remember a fabulous day at Bramall Lane, 8th May 1982 when United won promotion from the old Division 4. I was a student at Sheffield University and must have gone to 8 or 9 United matches that season (I couldn’t afford to travel to Carlisle games in term time). The atmosphere at the lane that season was unbelievable and your post has made me start looking for the programmes I collected that season. The 4 nil win against Peterborough on 8 May was great.
I also went to about 5 Wednesday games that season so I am not coming out as a closet Blade!! |

28 April 1934
Chesterfield v Carlisle United
A thumping 4 nil home win for the Spireites who finished second in the league behind Barnsley. It must have only been one up one down as Barnsley went up but Chesterfield were still in 3rd Division North the next season.
Carlisle finished in 13th place but were in decline (nothing much has changed there) and the following season finished bottom and had to apply for re-election.

28 April 1934
Sheffield United v Derby County
After all things promotion for the Blades yesterday, a complete change as United were already relegated by the time they played Derby. A 2 nil home win was too little too late.

28 April 1951
FA Cup Final. Blackpool 0 Newcastle United 2
Nowadays we think of the Cup Final as being “Wembley in May” but that wasn’t always the case. Two second half Jackie Milburn goals won the cup for Newcastle. I was surprised to read that the last surviving player from the 22 died in 2018.

29 April 1935
Cardiff City v Aberdeen
A long trip from the North of Scotland to South Wales for this friendly. The first time a club team from Scotland had visited Ninian Park.

There is an article about the brutality of the match on the BBC sport website. Michael Oliver, the referee, watched the game and said, applying current laws, he would have issued 11 red cards |

Yes I saw that, I might watch it again tonight and see how many I'd give. _________________ http://www.flickr.com/photos/sharrowblade/sets
