I'm contemplating scanning in all pages of early (40s to 60s) Hull City programmes. The output would purely be of historic/archive interest and would be available on line in a page flip style. I think that we would be ok legally.
With this in mind, has anyone been involved in a project like this and do they have any recommendations, eg Book scanners etc etc.
Here's a link to what we are going to try and do

Hope to hear some helpful comments

As Matt says it will take ages. I've done ever page of Barnsley home programmes from 1944 -68 and selected pages from the away issues. The biggest bonus Ive found when you store the pages on a cloud system like Google Drive you can search the images for individual words or terms. I'm really not sure how that works but its great for finding mentions of Youth players etc. I did look at displaying them in a similar style as you've mentioned but it would take a week of Sundays to upload all the images so knocked it on the head.

Thanks for the input. I’m under no illusions it’s a big project but it seems there is a bit of interest when I showed the flip Programme on my daily Twitter feed @TigerProgrammes.
Just hoping someone will give access to an automated book scanner! |

I run The Arsenal Collection
https://thearsenalcollection.org.uk/
I use an Epson GT-15000 A3 scanner which I bought second hand for £150 on ebay. It is a bit of a beast but it is a great workhorse and quick than a Canon A4 scanner that I use for smaller stuff.
I scan them using a software package called Vuescan. It's well worth the money.
https://www.hamrick.com
It has a ton of features that increase efficiency of scanning. I can heartily recommend it.
I scan the programmes as jpgs then convert them to pdfs using Adobe Acrobat. It's possible to scan them as pdfs using vuescan but it's just not as good as Acrobat.
I then use automated functions in Acrobat to do text recognition, reduce the file size, add a matermark and secure them so that they can't be copied.
After that I upload them to the website. I must admit that I do like look of that flip, but we're now so far into the project that I'm not sure if it is worth stopping and going for a new look.
As for copyright, talk to the club. I'm lucky that I write for the Arsenal programme and have an excellent relationship with the editor. He has no problem with us putting the programmes up on our website. He has full access to the jpgs and pdfs and uses them in the programme. You never know, they could be very helpful as it helps promote the club.
There are various organisations that may help with funding, such as the Lottery Heritage Fund. However, I gave up as there are ton of hoops to jump through. I know that they have funded The Everton Collection (which is what gave me the idea) and Ipswich (not on such a grand scale). I believe that West Brom are looking at digitising their collection as well.
Anyway, good luck with it. As everyone has said, it takes time (I've been doing it for about 5 years) and, at times, can be mind-numbingly boring, but worth the effort. |

My camera does not scan what I need. Do I require a special tool? |

I run Featherstone Rovers Heritage site (www.fevarchive.co.uk) and have loaded c2,500 complete programmes over a period of c3 years.
Different sport but same issues. Use a CanonScan LIDE400 scanner which didn't cost much. Standard software allows trimming and adjusting of images. Website is set up to use JPEGs. Also have a book scanner but find it very slow and cumbersome to use so wouldn't recommend.
Biggest issues tend to be with large modern issues where scanning individual pages can't be done without splitting the spine. That's where possibly a book scanner might be ok though I tend to take a photo of each page but thankfully don't encounter too many of those. |

Why don't you use a special scanning app? I think it's much easier than developing additional software. I use a universal system that scans not only documents and photos, but also barcodes, bank cards, tomographic results. Before I found https://smartengines.com/, I was using special applications from the Apple Store, but they were not that effective. In general, if you need to scan barcodes, you can use instant 1D and 2D barcode scanning software suitable for a wide range of documents. It allows you to scan a barcode even on devices with limited processing power. |

Quickest way would be to to separate all the pages - i.e. slice them up and feed them all into a single sheet feeder scanner like a Fujitsu.ScanSnap iX1500 I scanned 400 speedway programmes as pdf's in absolutely no time at all. I think it scanned the lot in about 25 mins. It took 10 times longer to pull apart the programmes (which were recycled). Of course if don't plan on getting rid of them this won't work for you. |
