There is still very little control on this site.

Spam has been reduced considerably but there are still dozens of spurious new members being registered everyday.

Perhaps I am being thick but it would help me and probably other members to understand why they are joining the site?

Spam accounts add a website link

The more times the link appears and is scraped by bots the better it performs, which is why they do it.

Easy to combat, by adding a question to the sign-up, I've done it on several forums and they no longer have any spambot visits

There is a big majority of people who do not post anything. Many could be a complete waste of time but many find reading the posts very informative. Members should be encouraged to stay in the forum, unless their behaviour is deemed to be against the spirit of the site. We need to encourage collectors and people who show an interest in our hobby, as from experience some collectors are very shy in coming forward but then as their confidence increases they feel as if they can contribute. I only have to think of my market stall at Newcastle Under Lyme, where I have two gentlemen who a couple of years ago would not have offered any opinions , now it is very difficult to shut them up.

Craig has added a "capcha" is that how to spell it? to try to stop them but some still get through. Most still can't post so as mentioned it has reduced the spam. The one or two that do post i get rid asap.

I think some members seem to be missing the point here about theses "members" which seem to increasing by about ten a day not contributing
Perhaps Grantham who seems to have Knowledge on the subject could reiterate and put them right on the subject
They really need to check the members list in descending order to get some idea of the problem

I'm not sure if this would work on this site or indeed if it's possible to do.

But how about new members have to contribute to discussions/topics a set number of times before they are allowed to start their own topic?

This would show they are interested in the site and the ongoing topics and may reduce the spammers when they realize they can't start a thread?

I don't think this issue is about genuine members, some of whom post rarely and some of whom are on every day.
Its more about an attack on the site possibly out of malice/mischief but possibly an attempt at marketing or lead selling.
It requires some solid anti spam/protection software.
the problem with that is it may cause difficulties for genuine members, it is expensive and requires constant monitoring.
the alternative is that this site might end up getting buried.

Anyone who has not posted in 3 months delete them.

Newcastle Under Lyme .. Thats one place i have never been to.

Four years membership ? why dont you tell us about life on a stall selling footie memorabilia.

As a dealer the last thing you need is a Wycombe Wanderers collector from Australia. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy
