Knocker West seen here on the 2nd row seated second from the end on the right hand side with the smart parting in his hair.

Prolific scorer as he played for United from 1910 until 1915 with181 appearances and 80 goals, United signed him from Nottingham Forest.
He was also the Leagues leading goal scorer in 1907-8 when United won the league with 26 in 35 games.

His somewhat harsh life time ban was eventually lifted in 1945.

The Sandy Turnbull bit is interesting
The article lists him as being fatally wounded but in actual fact his body has never been found
He is officially STILL listed as missing in action

Knocker West lived until almost 80 and died in 1965
When i was a young boy i was taken by my father for a haircut to a barbers shop in Cheetham Hill where Knocker spent much of his day chatting and telling stories

Manchester United had a 100 year history of taking breaks in Blackpool to train
They stayed at the Norbreck Catle in the 1960's and 1970's because it had an indoor swimming pool and plenty of land around it

In the first photo the players are sat in deckchairs and some are holding croquet sticks and golf clubs.A cricket bat is on the floor
Alexander "Sandy" Turnbull is on the back row and 4th from the left.
Enoch "Knocker" West is on the front row.He is the first person on the left

The second photo shows a game of cricket on the same break
Knocker West is behind the wicket
They are Linkson,Stacey,West and Halse with the bat

Couple of possibilities.

Norbreck Castle which would set the trend for later visits to Blackpool or the Cleveleys Hydro.

I will ask a couple of local history experts.

I can confirm that the hotel is the Norbreck Hall Hydro which is now known as the Norbreck Castle hotel.

Photo 12 on the website below shows the exact same entrance as depicted on your photos.

I am sure this part of the complex has been drastically changed but if I can find out more information I will post an update.

This part of the Norbreck does still exist today.

I am not sure when this was taken but the 2 storey building on the right is the same building as the one shown in your 'cricket' photo (reproduced below).

Great research and so interesting that almost 100 years later Manchester United were still going to the same hotel.

Now to get to Blackpool from Manchester with the M65 it takes 35/40 minutes
When i was a young lad in the 1960's it used to take an hour and a half(or even more) over Belmont
I wonder how long it took in 1909

As a thank you for your time,work and research i give you this offering from a bunch of gems i have recently acquired.
It is a 4 page programme from Manchester United v Blackpool on New Years Day 1940.
A friendly game
Most of what is known about this little known fixture is written in the programme at the time ie the score
The attendance is not known
There is comparatively quite a bit written,on page 3 about Blackpool,its manager and its players
There is mention of Blackpools all time leading scorer,Jimmy Hampson,who drowned off the Blackpool coast.
Dodds is noted as playing centre forward for Blackpool
I hope you enjoy this gem as there probably isn't two of them

There is a corner missing so possibly not everybody's cup of tea but as they were waiting for the invasion i don't think football was a priority
A crowd of only reportedly about 4000 watched this game
Only two weeks earlier(11/3/1941) Manchester United had the main stand and pitch destroyed by an air raid
Dodds up front for Blackpool whilst United had Couser the Bangor forward making one of only two guest appearances

Another one of those that one can probably say this is the only one in existence

Lovely programme Ray and nice scoreline too.

There were plenty of goals around at that time and I note we edged a 10 goal thriller at Bloomfield Road in October.

I have been aware of this particular programme for some time as I have a scan of the team page but must admit I have never come across another.

Never seen another one though.

The match was a North Regional League fixture which Blackpool won 2-0 with both goals from Dodds.

It is puzzling me now as to where my copy came from as I have had it for about 20 years.

Just wondered where you stood with regard to repairs / improvements to programmes.

Both of the items above are in need of a bit of TLC, but as you say, they may be one of a kind.

I am sure you spent good money on them, so would you spend a bit more and 'tidy them up' or will you leave well alone?

my philosophy is that you can clean them up any time so why rush into a decision
Although there are some to quality experts in the restoring world i am still a bit cautious

If there is only one or two in existence(well there's always two) then just buy it,if you can irrespective of the condition.

For example i have in my collection the famous bazaar brochure.
This was when Newton Heath attempted to raise money to save themselves.
They failed and out of the ashes came Manchester United
Now this bazaar brochure needs some care to the cover as can be seen by these scans

now this is a hugely significant and priceless piece of Manchester United ephemera
the only other copy i know of,sits in the Manchester United museum

I have to agree with you.

I have a couple of Pre War, one of which is pre WW1, where I will probably get some cellotape removed at some stage, but other than that, I intend to leave well alone, apart from flattening them out as best I can.

I think it all gives the item a certain amount of character.
