From the Royal Mail Courier. ""A new hand-stamp tool is
making it easier for delivery
offices to help the business to save
money that otherwise would be lost
from non-cancelled stamps.
Although stamp cancellation is a
mail centre task, postmen and women
can provide an essential last line of
defence to tackle this issue.
The new tool will be rolled out to all
delivery offices in May this year. This
follows a successful trial at Banbury
in Oxfordshire where one was selected
from six shortlisted tools.
Delivery office manager Michael
Kirby says: ‘We’re always keen to do
more to protect the revenue of the
organisation – so this is a good idea.’
Postwoman Kim Brown says: ‘The new tool is easy
to use. It also gives everyone the
chance to play their part in saving the
business money""

In reality postmen will be too lazy to use it. They'll moan like mad about the extra work load ? , i.e. manually cancelling a stamp which will take about two seconds , and probably want a new payment bonus for using it.

Surely this won't be much more time consuming than striking through a stamp with a pen as some postmen do now.

You would not believe how lazy some postmen are. And the moaning is incredible. The simple fact is they are still stuck in the old state owned industry mode and can't understand the world has changed. They just can't see that at the end of the day it's our pay in our pocket on the line. And this simple method could save thousands of pounds. Postmen are paid extra money for delivering election leaflets , but also book the overtime for the extra work. So get paid twice. I shouldn't really say what goes on. You wouldn't believe it anyway.

My local Post Office has started to use a cancellation/franking stamp when I hand stamped envelopes over the counter. It's happened since they had a 'visit' recently, who from I'm not sure.

They're not all bad.

Last Christmas one of the post office blokes in the Liverpool sorting office found an opened letter addressed to Santa from an 89 year old lady.

Dear Santa,
Ive tried to be a good person all of my life and I just wanted to give my only grandson £100 for Christmas, probably the last thing I can do for my beautiful grandson. Please Santa, if you could help me out this one last time I'd be eternally grateful.

Happy Christmas
Elsie

The cynical old bastard at the post office had tears in his eyes and organised a whip round. They collected £91.50 and sent it on to Elsie (she'd left her address on the reverse).

A couple of weeks later the same PO sorter noticed a similar letter, with similar hand-writing and again with no stamp.

He opened it up and it was indeed from Elsie.

Dear Santa,

Thank you so much for the £91.50 for my gorgeous grandson. I know I asked for £100 but you know what thieving bastards they are at the post office...

It would be interesting to know how much the good old Royal Mail was losing through the re-use of stamps to make this new "process" cost-effective. It must have been a large sum.

Shocked Shocked When I read this thread, I added the comment
'is this an April Fools gag' thinking that it could be a wind up and as you say 'way over the top'.

Obviously my comment was classed as part of the 'rubbish' of this thread.... not sure why, when I really couldn't believe what I was reading.

Can I ask why the whole thread has not been deleted, or are we now at a point where some posters are immune from being criticised or censored.

Your thoughts please.

BTW.... Grimsby are going to win the league....enjoy the play off lottery

Why remove the whole thread when a valid piece of information was posted in the first instance with some reaonable and appropriate responses thereafter?.

I am sure there wasn't a deliberate intention to remove your post, it was probably that it didn't add anything to the thread and just went with the others.

And why bring the Conference play offs into the equation? That appears to be a childish dig at pastpirate just because he deleted your post.

As for the title I think you may be right.
But I hope not.
Whoever wins the title I hope we play you in the league next season.

My 'Is this an April Fools gag' was a serious response. The Royal Mail have gone back to using a practice that started out over a 100 years ago and became obsolete because of modern technology.

If it didn't add anything to the thread, then what on earth did the well used joke about the 93 year old and her opened envelope bring to the table.

As for being labelled 'childish' because my post got deleted....... really !
Shake Shake .....its called football banter....and I think pastpirate took it in the spirit that it was intended. Clap

In fairness to PP, I thought you were asking if the OTT posts were an April Fools gag, rather than the original post. Which of course would have meant that your question was no longer relevant once those OTT posts had disappeared.

Probably just a misinterpretation

It is a huge amount. I know people who live in houses worth £4 million and they re use stamps. I get my "" information " as I open pillar boxes. They are the sort of people who write to the local newspaper complaining about the decline of the postal service, using a second hand stamp. I guess they don't get irony.
