I'm going to show my ignorance here (no change there) but how much do sellers pay at these events?
As i've never sold anything through any of them but if a buyers premium is 19% plus the additional VAT plus 3% through the saleroom which i think is quite a bit i'm somewhat curious Confused

Sportingold charge the vendor commission of 10% on the hammer price plus 20% VAT on their commission.
eg a sale for £200 would result in commission of £20 plus VAT of £4

Take away all the lots that dont sell, the cost of advertising, catalogue printing and distribution, staff costs, venue renting etc etc, they do alright but the idea of any business is to make a decent profit to make all the hard work worthwhile

It does seem to vary on seller's premium though, I've heard somewhere between 15-20% + VAT is usual. Does anyone know about unsold lots, or minimum fees etc? I heard that one auction house, not a specialist sports auctioneer, charges £20 per unsold lot, and then of course this escalates if the seller puts in to next auction and the lot were not to sell again.

I think what I want to know is, if a lot sells for a below estimate figure, say £30, does the vendor only have to pay the 10% +VAT, or is there a minimum charge?

With Sportingold and Footballsportsauctions the seller is charged 10% of the hammer price, Sportingold you have to pay VAT on the commission.

Neither charge any other fees to the seller, if it doesnt sell it doesnt cost.

......... and they only have a specific number of auctions during the year when they will make money. The rest of the year they still have ongoing costs.

My mother in law reckons that paying £10 for a steak in a pub restaurant is robbery. I explain that they have loads of costs to cover to deliver the steak and trimmings on a plate to her table - premises, rates, staff, utility costs etc, etc etc. but she could not get past the fact that she can buy a lump of meat for a lot less in Tescos!!!!

sporting memorys, my auction house charges 10 to 15% sellers commission, no other charges whatsoever

the buyers pay 15%, plus vat on commission if applicable(this of course is paid to the taxman)

the 3% surcharge, plus vat, is payable if the clients uses the saleroom online bidding service(this is collected by the auction house and paid in full to them) if the client leaves bids direct by commission or phone then no charge is made for this service

this buyers rate is the cheapest anywhere and will not "creep up" in the near future

the costs include collection of the items, the brochure or catalogue hosting, insurance, venue hire, staff costs etc

don't feel sorry for me, but I work very hard to produce 2 sales a year!
