Post subject: British teams in Europe? |
|

I'm looking to get a full list of all British teams that have played in European Competition and then every game they have played.
As far as I am aware every European competiton is as follows:
Champions League
Cup Winners Cup
European Cup
Inter Cities Fairs Cup
Intertoto Cup
Super Cup
UEFA Cup
I'm not including the Anglo-Italian Cup as the countries that can participate in that competiton is limited unlike the others.
Any others that people can think of?
Also if anyone can add to the following list any other teams that have played in Europe?
English:
Arsenal
Aston Villa
Birmingham City
Blackburn Rovers
Bolton Wanderers
Burnley
Chelsea
Coventry City
Derby County
Everton
Ipswich Town

73/74
We played Vasas and Sporting Lisbon.
Edit: You can add Hibs to the list as I know they definitely played in the Inter City Fairs. |

Don't know if you want to include Welsh Cup winners who qualified for the ECWC. Don't forget Newport County !!!
Remember 1980/81 season when they beat Crusaders (IRE) in 1st round, Hauger (DEN) in 2nd round, then recorded their record attendance in 3rd round vs Carl Zeis Jena (GER). |

From Wales Cardiff, Swansea, Newport, Wrexham and Merthyr have all played in Europe. As well as loads of others that i couldnt name TNS, Connahs Quay, Barry Town etc.
Also, up until about 1994 when Cardiffs route to Europe got banned - It is now officialy impossible for Cardiff, Swansea, Wrexham, Newport, Merthyr and Connahs Quay to enter Europe as we dont play Welsh League, cant play in the Welsh Cup and wouldnt be nominated by the English FA! A ristraint of trade, surely? Anyway.. My original point, Up until 1994 Cardiff City had played in more European games than any other team in the UK! |

List updated.
That's unbelievable Craig! So now even if you got to The Premiership and finished in a European place you would not be allowed to qualify?
Why also Newport, Merthyr and Connahs Quay though? Don't they play in the FAW Welsh League? |

Firstly, Sorry i meant Colwyn Bay not Connahs Quay.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/league_of_wales/7178567.stm explains everything too!
I have a feeling there may be a website somewhere which lists all welsh clubs results in european competitions but im not sure where so ill have to take a look. Or you could get a list of welsh cup winners easy enough then use soccerbase to look up their games. |

Bradford City played in the intertoto cup in 00/01 and played Atlantas, Waalwijk and Zenit St Petersburg at home
Wimbledon played in the intertoto cup in 95/96 can;t remember who they played now though, think they played 4 games two home two away although it was 4 different teams
Sheff Wed played in the intertoto cup in 95/96 and played two home games one of which was Spora, they also played in the UEFA cup many moons ago
Fulham also played in the intertoto cup and uefa cup in 02/03 I think they had 5 or 6 home games, got the details at home will let you know later.
Ebbw Vale played in the Intertoto cup can;t remember when though, think it was Bastia they played in the late 90's, but can check as i have the programme somewhere
Queen of the south played in the UEFA cup qualifiers at the start of this season against FC Midytjalland (spelt wrong probably) who then went on to play Man City.
St Johnstone played in europe in 99/00 (i think) i believe they played VPS Vasas home and away.
Greenock Morton played Chelsea in the ECWC in the 70's
I'm sure Motherwell have played in europe as well, just can;t remember when
I've been collecting English teams homes in the european comps you mention and have over 330 (this does include a few scottich and welsh items), but the Spurs and West Brom homes are complete (also got most of the Spurs aways), unfortunately this collection has had to go on hold for the moment while I pay off for my new car and the small spare cash i have got will go towards the Gills/Spurs progs first. |

Thanks for all the help so far lads!
Another question, Derry City are a Northern Irish team competing in the Republic of Irelands league. Should I include them under the Northern Irish teams or leave them out as they represent a country outside the UK? |

Yes, twice.
We were the first Welsh side to play in Europe in the 1961-62 season, against Motor Jena of East Germany. They couldn't get visas to come to the UK, so we had to play the "home" leg in Austria. Good luck getting a programme from either game, I've never seen one.
Also played Slavia Sofia in 66-67, 0-0 at home, 0-4 away. Don't think a programme exists for the away leg here either.
Became Swansea City in 1970, but didn't qualify for Europe again until the 80s because we were rubbish in the 70s!
81-82 Lokomotiv Leipzeig - Programmes easy to get, both legs.
82-83 Braga - home programme easy, away not sure if it exists
82-83 Sliema - won 17-0 on aggregate, the highest in Europe at the time I believe. Programmes easy to get for both legs.
82-83 Paris St. Germain - Again no problem with either prog.
83-84 Magdeburg - Same as above.
88-89 Panathinaikos - Home prog fine, away programme I've seen once on ebay, £70, nobody bought it.
91-92 Monaco - No problem getting either of these.
These are all cup winners cup games, by the way.
Other Welsh teams in Europe (first year in brackets):
Cup Winners Cup:
Bangor City (62/63), Borough Utd (63/64), Cardiff (64/65), Wrexham (72/73), Newport (80/81), Merthyr (87/88 ), Barry (94/95), Llansantffraid (now TNS) (96/97), Cwmbran (97/98 ).
UEFA Cup:
Inter Cardiff (94/95), Bangor (94/95), Afan Lido (95/96), Newtown (96/97), Barry (96/97), Cwmbran (99/00), Cmwbran (01/02), TNS (02/03), Haverfordwest (04/05), Rhyl (05/06), Carmarthen (05/06), Llanelli (06/07)
Champions' League:
Cwmbran (93/94), Barry (97/98 ), Llansantffraid (00/01), Rhyl (04/05), Llanelli (08/09)
Intertoto:
Ton Pentre (95/96), Conwy (96/97), Ebbw Vale (97/98 ), Cwmbran (99/00), Aberystwyth (99/00), Carmarthen (01/02), Caersws (02/03), Bangor (03/04), Llanelli (07/08 ), Rhyl (08/09)
I've got a full list of all the games played if you want it.
Also Craig it's Colwyn Bay who play in the Unibond, Connah's Quay are in the WPL!
In 1982 we finished 6th in the First Division, in a UEFA Cup spot. But because we won the Welsh Cup we wanted to play in the Cup Winners' Cup anyway. Would have been interested if we hadn't won it, to see if we'd have been allowed to represent England in the UEFA. It hasn't been tested since then, the closest being Cardiff last year obviously. |

Derry City are one of the few teams to have represented two different countries in European competitions.
They played in the 1965/66 European Cup as the Champions of Northern Ireland playing Lyn Oslo and Anderlecht.
They played in the 1989/90 European Cup as the Champions of Eire playing Benfica. |

You need to add Ards and Glenavon to your list of Northern Irish teams. Ards played in the 1958/59 European Cup and Glenavon played in the 1957/58 European Cup. |
