I really can't wait until next season European campaign now!

Rather than the current format where the group stage you play 4 teams - 2 home and 2 away - you will now play 4 teams at home and away!

Plus Germany is a fantastic country to stage a final in! The transport is second to none and facilities at the stadiums are excellent!

A Hearts v Everton final will do me fine! Very Happy

Hopefully Hearts can get to the group stages, I'd like to go to a big stadium in Germany or France. A Scandinavian trip wouldn't be too bad either, Norway or Iceland.

I went to Germany for the Nurnberg vs Everton game in the UEFA Cup last season mate. What fantastic people the Germans are. Everyone including the police were very friendly!

Norway is one to avoid - cold and very expensive!!!!! Especially in Brann where we went.

I'd imagine the French to be very arrogant from what i've heard, but then again I have never witnessed a match in France.

I'd love to go to some random country like Lithuania or Slovenia or somewhere like that!

I'd agree with what you said about Germany Barrett. I went for three weeks during the World Cup, and apart from a nice little scar on the top of my head where a Turk decided to hit me with a belt, the Country was brilliant. More recently, I went to see Nantes last home game of their promotion season last year, and again, the French were very friendly, and the atmosphere outside the ground was more like an English rugby match.
I'm looking forward to seeing who Glentoran get, couldn't afford to go and see them away, but might be tempted to get a cheap deal to Belfast tosee the home leg!

Nurnberg .. apart from the proximity to the Rally site (and the impression the fans gave that they were still holding one with their offensive arm pointing gestures and very loud too) - had a great time.

Alkmaar - froze my nuts off in 4 day stay in Amsterdam!

Am I the only one who thinks that the whole issue of "Champion's League" - which is nothing of the sort - and the Europa League have absolutely nothing to do with football, but are there purely to rip fans off, line the pockets of fuckwit footballers and big business?
Would rather boil my head than subscribe to all that nonsense.

There will be 20 teams in the Champions League Play off round, the 10 winners will qualify for the Champions League group stages, the 10 Losers will enter the Europa League group stages.

The Champions League will have the usual 8 groups of 4. The top 2 will go through to the next round of the Champions League. The 3rd place finisher will enter the knock-out round of the Europa League.

The Europa League will have 12 groups of 4. The top 2 in each group will go through to the next round with the 8 drop-outs from the Champions League making 32 teams.

Hopefully Murdoch's empire will go belly up in the not too distant future, and all this nonsense will be consigned to the football history books. How can anyone lose games in one competition, and then be rewarded for it by going into another one? It's absolute madness.
Why don't they go the whole hog, play "rush" goalies, next goal the winner, three and you're in, keepy uppy, lion taming, kangaroo boxing, etc.etc.and make a real circus out of it? Next thing you know they'll give players squad numbers that mean nothing at all bar extra revenue for the club shop. I remember the days when ordering a 99 guaranteed you an ice cream with a flake in it for a ten bob (50 pence) Nowadays you're likely to get a medium replica away strip (3rd choice) with the name of some obscure Balkan import on the back, cost a king's fortune!!!!!!!!
Bring back Sir Stan, the Preston Plumber, the Lion of Vienna....
"No, nurse, it's not time for me take my largactil cocktail, and my care in the community appointment isn't while next week. Do we still send wee boys up chimnies?"

What annoys me is this sort of scenario: Arsenal (not because it's Arsenal, it's the principle below) are currently 4th in the league and will finish there. Now in all probability they will get through their qualifier.. and what happens they carry their seeding over and above quite a few teams whose performance over the previous season has been better than theirs. Instead of ensuring the teams that qualified by right to the group stage getting the higher seedings at that (next) stage of the competition UEFA preserve the status-quo. In other words there's no real need to finish 1st (or 2nd or 3rd) in England - 4th is good enough, they will draw some substandard team (and collect a nice pay day into the bargain)

I don't know if they have had this in any previous years in the Champions League, but from the 3rd Qualifying round, the draw is split into Champions and Best Placed (or non-Champions).

I have edited my original post to show this, I guess UEFA were just trying to make it easier for us all Shocked

Champions Q3 (CHQ3) 17 Winners from Q2, will join Olympiakos, Slavia Prague and the Winners of the Swiss league in one draw (20 teams in total) with 10 going through to the Play off round.

Best Placed Q3 (NCQ3) Dynamo Moscow, Sporting Lisbon, Shakhtar and Twente will be joined by 6 more teams; runners-up from Romania, Turkey, Belgium, Greece, Czech Republic and Scotland. (10 teams in total) 5 will go through to the Play off round.

The 2 groups stay seperated in the Play off round.

The 10 Champions Q4 (CHQ4) teams who qualified from CHQ3, will be drawn together, 5 2-legged matches. 5 will qualify for the Group Stages of the Champions League. The 5 losers will drop into the Europa League group stages.

The 5 Best Placed Q4 (NCQ4) teams who qualified from NCQ3, will be joined by Arsenal, the 4th placed teams from Spain and Italy and 3rd placed teams from France and Germany. 5 2-legged matches, 5 will qualify for the Group Stages of the Champions League. The 5 losers will drop into the Champions League group stages.

I'm glad Hearts are in the Europa league now Wink

Any questions and I'll see what I can do.

Thats really confusing but thanks Jambo! Smile

Do you have any idea who Everton's likely opponents could be?

Oh and this new Europa League, is the trophy still the same old UEFA Cup or a brand new trophy that we haven't seen yet?

Well, actually, Shakhtar Donetsk winning tonights UEFA Cup final may have done you a HUGE favour.

One place in the group stages is guarenteed for the UEFA/Europa winner, since Shakhtar have already qualified for the Champions League next season, the place is made available to the next down on the list, England's Cup Winner or 5th place finisher.

So, if Everton win the FA Cup or finish 5th, they enter directly into the Group Stages.
If, Manchester United win the FA Cup and Aston Villa finish 5th, Everton will be seeded in the Play off round and and will face any one of 37 unseeded teams.
