Pardon my ignorance, but what makes this ticket so special?

I find it quite bizarre, that two guys would both bid over £800 when with seconds to get it was £79.

That's a hell of an overkill. I just don't get it.

Confused

Sometimes you know there's going to be last minute lumping on,been there myself. In the end it wasn't overkill as the winner would have missed out had his bid been not as high.

Undoubtedly, but just found it strange that both bids were in that bracket when the third highest bid was £125.

What made the £800 plus figure a marker?

I agree with sharrow. I find it very unusual to see that the bidding went from £125 then two bids of over £800 and no other bids between these two figures. Very strange!!!

I am no expert but could this be a case of two "snipers".

The first sticks in an outrageously high bid in the last few seconds of the auction thinking that he will win the auction at somewhere over £125 but the second bidder looks as though he has automated sniping software that will top any bid?

from personal experience I missed out on a prog that went for £380.
When it appeared later it was at 9.99 with a minute to go.I bid what looked like overkill £400 and won it for £362-that's Ebay for you-it's not about what it looks like it may go for.

Not unusual at all, happens a lot on rare items, especially Chelsea items. Two well funded Chelsea collectors needed the ticket, the third highest bidder would have liked the ticket but doesn’t have the available funds of the other two. I know the underbidder, I am sure he will be shocked that someone else outbid him. The two high bidders both appear to have used snipers. Happy that I don’t collect Chelsea.

Going by their feedback score I can make an educated guess at who the two top bidders were, having if I'm correct, bought and sold with both of them in the past.

ebay can be a dubious place at times but in this instance it's just two collectors with deep pockets going head to head. I don't begrudge anyone their money and it's theirs to do with as they please. I just wish I was the seller Very Happy

Life is not a level playing field. We play the hand we are dealt and sometimes we improve as further cards come into play.

In this case as with many other tickets there is no future financial profit to be had. If any more appear now or in the near future then price will drop given the big players will already own one.

I haven't suggested that anything untoward was happening.

In fact I've already been rebuked via email suggesting I stay away from things that I don't understand. Nice.

I'm aware of the identities of the two bidders.

But, there does appear to be a trend in the hobby that if anyone questions the high price an item fetches, then there is an instant defensive reaction from some, along the lines of 'Its their money they can do with it as they like' and 'You're just envious '. You have no idea, you're just a five bob merchant.

Those who put up that line of argument are normally good friends of those who are bidding.

I'd have to take issue with you Clive over the third bidder, you're assuming that he didn't have the available funds. Would it not be more realistic that perhaps that's what he valued the item at?

Bidding way over the odds on any item to the degree that was (lets be practical it was) just because you can or to make someone like minded pay a huge amount..... doesn't make you clever, in fact you end up looking the opposite.

If you were to walk into your local casino on Saturday night and some bored local farmer or Chinese Restaurant owner throws a £800 wedge onto the roulette table, would you think 'well, its their money' or would you think 'that's just plain stupid'.

I agree that the response of “it’s their money” is just boring, of course it is and if you want to spend it that way then go for it. I would be interested if this is in anyway rare or special if anyone knows?

You can never guess eBay, I have seen the Villa European Cup final go for over £100 recently for no discernible reason for example.

THE PROBLEM I FIND AS A CHELSEA COLLECTOR.WHEN YOU SEE ANYTHING ULTRA RARE.THE AUCTION HOUSES OR PERSON SELLING HAVE ALLREADY INFLATED THE PRICE BECAUSE THEY KNOW THESE TWO BUYERS WILL FIGHT IT OUT .SO YOU HAVE NO CHANCE.I KNOW SOMEONE WHO WILL DELIBERATELY RUN THE PRICE UP.ON ITEMS

False equivalence. If you win an auction you gain something tangible, even if others do not agree with the price.

If you chuck £800 on a roulette table it's a total gamble.Having said that it's still their money to do with as they please.

Anything ultra rare is always going to go for a premium.

My Chelsea ticket collecting has slowed down because I can't match the prices the big three collectors are willing to pay (beyond them there are 3 or 4 others who will also pay well for a wanted item).

I'm not bitter about it it's market forces in operation. They have been more successful than myself on the employment front so, have more money than me to spend on the hobby.

I content myself that once they have an item I can pick it up in time for a price that suits me. Also, on a few occasions, I've been able to sell on to one of the main collectors, an item for a decent profit, which has in turn helped me to buy some other item that I want.
