9th March, 1957

Carlisle United 1 (??? pen) Derby County 3 (Brown 2, Woodhead)

att: 11,400

Third win in succession for the Rams (all three goals coming in the first half) in their ultimately successful chase to catch Workington at the top of the table.
The two 3rd Division North aways at Brunton Park are amongst the harder aways to find for Derby collectors.

9th March, 1974

Dunstable Town v Bromsgrove Rovers

From memory, this was round about the time Dunstable were looking to progress by signing one or two rather famous players of the recent past?

Saturday 10th March 1951

Division III South

Exeter City 1 Crystal Palace 2 (Broughton, Herbert)

Gate: 6,534

To say this was an unexpected win for Palace is a leitotes of the first order, it was in fact Palace's last win of the season and indeed only maximum after 13th January. The wooden spoon was duly won for the second time in 3 years and re-election sought. The two goalscorers are worth a mention - Trevor Herbert played only 8 games, scoring twice, at centre forward after signing from Orient where he didn't play a game, while winger Ted Broughton came to Palace from New Brighton in 1948 and played 100 times over the next 5 years, scoring 6 goals and becoming known as "Granny" at least in the Hurn household. I'm not quite sure why or how widespread that was. This is Gr... - sorry, Ted:-

Monday 11th March 1957

Division III South

Plymouth Argyle 0 Crystal Palace 1 (Deakin)

Gate: 13,374

Another of these away double-headers - a Monday night game at Home Park following a Saturday game at Torquay. I presume Sunday was spent playing golf, probably not warm enough to sun bathe. And a win for Palace with Mike Deakin grabbing the goal, one of 16 that season for him, and one of nine in the last 12 games, a sequence that helped struggling Palace to finish 20th only 3 points and 2 places behind Argyle. In all, Mike got 63 goals for Palace in 152 games putting him 13th in the table of Palace goalscorers - a very underrated player. Older brother of Alan, the Aston Villa & Walsall wing half & U23 international.

Saturday 12th March 1955

Divison III South

Walsall 1 Crystal Palace 4 (Berry, Belcher 2, Cooper)

Gate: 10,773

Great beer ad on the back page! Below that the league tables show Walsall bottom and Palace 22nd. The Glaziers' league form improved after this game, maybe confidence was lifted, as they won 5 and drew 4 of their last 13 games, not exactly promotion form but mid table and as a result, Palace rose by 2 places to 20th at the end, while even the poor old Saddlers picked up to overhaul Colchester who slipped to the foot.

12th March, 2005

Western League - Div.1

Biddestone v Ilfracombe Town

The home club appear to have been unable to compete at such a (relatively, for them) high level of the pyramid as, within two years, they'd resigned and decided to compete only as a club for youth football.

Saturday 13th March 1965

Division II

Northampton Town 1 Crystal Palace 1 (Cutler)

Gate: 17,350

Cobblers were top of the league at the time and Palace about where they ended up in 7th, but honours were even and Northampton were promoted as runners-up to Newcastle, an amazing achievement in only their second season ever at this level, while it was Palace's first in Div 2 since 1925. The goalscorer was left winger Paul Cutler, a former junior who made 11 appearances before heading off to Southern League Nuneaton Borough in 1966. This was the only goal of his league career. Photo dated Sept 1965.
