Saturday 15th February 1975

Division III

Crystal Palace 3 (Swindlehurst, Taylor, Whittle) Aldershot 0

Gate: 15,394

A good win for Palace who were in the middle of a 12-game unbeaten run which wasn't enough to get them into the promotion places as they finished 5th, 4 points behind 3rd placed Charlton. Shots narrowly avoided the drop, having a better goal average than relegated Bournemouth. Below photo shows Peter Taylor, partly obscured, sliding home the second goal past keeper Glen Johnson. Taylor & Swindlehurst both scored 14 league goals in this season, Palace's first of 3 at this level following their double relegation.

Saturday 16th February 1929

FA Cup 5th round

Huddersfield Town 5 Crystal Palace 2 (Griffiths, Charlton pen)

Gate: 19,000

Having seen off Kettering, Bristol Rovers, Luton (7-0) after a replay and Millwall also after a draw, Palace ventured to the North and previous season's losing finalists, Huddersfield Town. Though they gave a decent account of themselves, it was a bridge too far and it came in the midst of a club record 17-game unbeaten league run which ended with Palace finishing second on goal average to neighbours Charlton, thus missing promotion from Div 3 South by a whisker. The Terriers reached the cup semi final, losing to eventual cup-winners Bolton.

Saturday 18th February 1961

Division IV

Mansfield Town 1 Crystal Palace 2 (Summersby, Petchey)

Gate: 5,874

One of 4 wins in a row for Palace as they led the division at this stage, with Mansfield then second bottom but recovering to end up in 20th and avoid having to seek re-election - not surprising with that forward line. Featured in the programme is Palace centre forward Dennis Uphill, a former captain of the Stags who played 83 games there, hitting 38 goals. He got another 17 at Palace in 63 games, not as healthy a strike rate, but overall he scored 147 league goals in 344 games for his 6 clubs before joining Rugby Town in 1963, aged 32. I remember playing on the rec as a kid - every time one of us skied it over, we all yelled "Uphill", presumably triggered by his scoring decline at Selhurst.

18th February, 1933

FA Cup 5th round

Derby County 2 (Bowers 2) Aldershot 0

This was Aldershot's first league season and they had, apparently, changed their name from Aldershot Town upon gaining entry to the league (at the expense of Thames) after winning the Southern League the season before, however it looks like nobody told the programme editor.

They had beaten Clapton Orient, Accrington Stanley, Bristol Rovers and Millwall to reach this stage.

Derby would go on to reach the semi-finals, losing out to Manchester City.

18 February 1939

Tranmere Rovers v Newcastle United

A 3 - 0 away win.

This was a disastrous season for Tranmere as they finished bottom of the division with only 17 points. Nice programme though.

Monday 19th February 1973

FA Cup 4th round, 2nd replay (at Villa Park)

Sheffield Wednesday 3 (Joicey 3), Crystal Palace 2 (Rogers, Payne)

Gate: 19,150

I went by club coach to this match, taking the afternoon off school with a couple of mates. Disappointing outcome, for us, but the culmination of 3 ties between struggling 1st Div Palace and mediocre 2nd Div Wednesday, watched by a total of 98,377 fans. Palace wore an unfamiliar kit in all 3 games, red & black stripes, as modelled below by the wonderful Don Rogers, a scorer here, and on the programme cover by Mel Blyth. The Owls lost at home to Chelsea in the 5th round. Palace didn't win a league game for the next 6 weeks and their 1st Division goose was surely cooked.

19th February, 1958

One of the most iconic issues in our hobby. Even years ago it proved quite difficult for me to find a copy without the United team being filled in on the centre pages. I don't know whether that's still the case.

19th February, 1989

An early start on a Sunday morning for Crawford Collets and the Oxford Nondesripts in the 3rd division of the Oxford Sunday League.

Saturday 20th February 1965

FA Cup 5th round

Crystal Palace 3 (Burnside, Burridge, Holton), Nottingham Forest 1 (Wignall)

Gate: 41,667 (new ground record)

One of the biggest days in the club's history saw 1st Div high-flyers Forest with their great forward line sent packing by Div 2 Palace in front of what was then the highest Selhurst Park attendance - that didn't last long as it was beaten in the quarter final. Peter Burridge smashed one in from 25 yards which he says is one of his top goals, I was then aged 9 and the only goal I actually remember is Frank Wignall's as he slid it in near the post which was about 10 feet from where I was standing. I think that was my big brother's ticket (I'm sure a 9-yr-old wouldn't have paid 4 shillings!) and the BR poster I picked up at an antique fair about 20 years ago. Forest finished a healthy 5th that season.

Saturday 20 February 1926 FA Cup 5th Round 51,630

Manchester City 11 (Eleven) Crystal Palace 4

After defeating Chelsea 2-1 in the previous round, Palace went up to Maine Road and suffered a 11-4 defeat. At half time City were 7-0 up, so as far as Palace fans were concerned we 4-4 in the second half, at one stage the score was 8-4 until City scored a further three in the last fifteen minutes.

This was not Palace's heaviest defeat in the cup, that honour belongs to Burnley who back in 1909 won 9-0 in a replay after a goaless draw at the Palace. [/img]
