10/2/70 Division Three
Bristol Rovers 3 Luton 0
A huge win for the hosts over their promotion rivals, but at the end of the season it was Luton who went up in second place, four points above Rovers who missed out in third place.

10/2/78 Division Four
Stockport v Huddersfield
The original date for the match was postponed and when played on 27/2/78 the visitors won 1-0

10/2/68 Division Two
QPR 2 Crystal Palace 1
An important win for the home side who were promoted in second place at the end of the season on goal average denying Blackpool in third.

Friday 11th February 1966

Division II

Ipswich Town 2 Crystal Palace 2 (Whitehouse 2)

Gate: 9,151

Brian Whitehouse scored both in a run of 5 goals in 5 games, and he ended up Palace top-scorer in this season with 7. Ipswich finished 15th and Palace 11th.

Of more interest perhaps is the double-page showing a photo of a young Alan Stephenson, who had settled his differences with the Palace management and resolved to stay, and opposite an advert for Dave Bickers motorbikes. Now, anyone of my age who spent every other Saturday at home watching Grandstand, would be familiar with Dave as the King of Motor Cross, biking up and down hills, over muddy banks and streams to win thrilling races and ending completely covered in silt. It made for great TV while you waited for the tele-printer.

11th February, 1956

Workington 0 Derby County 3 (Powell, Straw, Woodhead)

att: 8,709

11th February, 1989

Maidstone United 2 Newport County 1 (Richards)

att: 857

A game of two extremes.

Maidstone went on to win the Conference and gain promotion to the Football League.
On the other hand, this was Newport's final league game - though they played one more Cup tie at Kiddermisnter a few days later - and they were wound up 16 days later and their record expunged.

Of course, Maidstone would have their own similar problems just 3 years later.....

Saturday 12th February 1955

Division III South

Swindon Town 0 Crystal Palace 0

Gate: 4,959

The second goalless draw of the season for this struggling pair, both fighting against re-election - and both succeeding (just) with Palace 21st on 38 points and Swindon a place below and level with Exeter on 37 points but safe on goal average. Walsall picked up the wooden spoon.

At left back for Palace was Roy "Chopper" Greenwood, seen below and you can read about him and other "Choppers" in the March Programme Monthly.

Skiold Football Tournament Programme - 11 & 12/2/1979

This was for a two day tournament held in Norway with the following teams competing - Lillestrom, Valeregen, Mjondalen, Drammen Bylag and an All Star British team featuring Trevor Brooking, Bob Latchford, Frank Worthington, Dave Thomas, Peter Lorimer, Ian Callaghan, John Toshack and Terry Yorath in their side.
How they got time off from their clubs to play is anybody's guess!

I don’t have a convenient record of match dates for my programmes, so you’ve been spared a slew of Dundalk programmes on these threads! Noticed this one yesterday as it happens. 55 years ago today, FAI Cup, Dundalk 1-1 St Patrick’s Atheltic (Dundalk won the replay but lost to Limerick in the quarter-final)

Saturday 13th February 1960 (61 years ago today)

Division IV

Chester 0 Crystal Palace 1 (Sexton)

Gate: 5,132

This win came in the middle of a 10-game unbeaten run that had Palace on the verge of a promotion place, but that form wasn't kept up and it was followed by only 3 wins in the last 12 to leave the Londoners in 8th spot, while Chester just avoided the ignominy of re-election in 20th. Walsall, so often rooted at the bottom with Palace in the post-war era, won the division at a gallop. Manchester United old boy Stan Pearson was in charge at Sealand Road after ending his playing career there.

13/2/94 League Cup Semi Final 1st Leg
Man Utd 1 Sheff Wed 0 Agg 5-1
Ryan Giggs with the only goal on the night that set United up for a trip to Wembley where they would be beaten by Aston Villa, but this programme was about much more than a match.
Three weeks after his passing, this was the first opportunity for United to honour Sir Matt Busby in a home programme.

Couple of non-league issues

13th February, 1954

Lancashire Amateur Cup

Earle v Middleton Amateurs

(a bit moth-eaten but it's a very flimsy single sheet)

13th February, 1965

Corinthian League

East Ham United v Hatfield Town

Saturday 14th February 1976 - Valentine's Day

FA Cup 5th round

Chelsea 2 (Wilkins, Wicks), Crystal Palace 3 (Chatterton, Taylor 2)

Gate: 54,407

A reminder that though it's a famous (3rd Div) Palace victory, Chelsea in fact were only half way up Division 2 at the time, and that Ray Wilkins at this stage of his career was a frequent scorer:-

Does anyone know any of these guys?

Finally a photo from the game. Peter Taylor ran Chelsea ragged and scored one goal, the third, from a free kick past The Cat in this sort of position. This particular one was cleared, with Martin Hinshelwood and Dave Swindlehurst looking on. As I said, a big day in Palace's history and one I'll never forget.

I remember dealing with Martin Corrie once or twice way back in time.

14th February, 1955

Derby County 6 Sports Club Simmering (Vienna) 0

Given that Derby were lying third from the foot of the 2nd Division, the score suggests that this was a friendly organised to give the team a bit of confidence but the programme tells us that the opponents were a top-level side in the Austrian game, having fought their way back from having their ground destroyed during the war.

No mention is made of the game in subsequent Derby programmes, an annoying habit the club had when it came to friendly matches all the way up to the early 70s.

14th February, 1953

Sidmouth Town v Seaton Town

Exeter & District Lge - Div.1 (at least, I think it is. There's no mention of the competition so I had to do a little bit of digging around.)

Strange shape for a programme. It's a gatefold issue but pages 5 & 6 are half the size of the other pages.
Perhaps it was a compromise as often happens with committees - note how many people are on the club's committee. It's a wonder they managed to make any decisions. Still, it would have kept the bar at the Balfour Arms Hotel in business.
