Arsenal 3 Derby County 4 (Gill 3, Crooks)
att: 21,405
4th February, 1939

Golders Green v Southwick.
I don't know the score but the home team won as they were eliminated in the next round by Sutton United.

Tuesday 5th February 1974
FA Cup 4th round, 2nd replay
Portsmouth 2 (Davies, Kellard), Orient 0
Gate: 19,595
I was one of many home fans to turn out to see this 2nd replay between 2 Second Div teams studded with ex-Palace players. It was me who marked each player out of 10, silly sod. Pompey won through with a goal in each half and travelled to Forest in Round 5, losing 1-0. |

5/2/72 FA Cup 4th Round
Reading 1 Arsenal 2
Sounds like the Fourth Division side gave the Gunners a bit of a scare here with a close scoreline and an own goal providing the winner.
A rare goal for Pat Rice as well on the day.
Arsenal went all the way to the Final where they lost to Leeds.
5/2/79
Trevor Whymark Testimomial
Ipswich v Norwich
No idea of the score, but Whymark had been a good servant to the club scoring 75 times in 261 appearances between 1969-79.
He was also capped once by England in that time.
After he left Portman Road, he spent another seven years in the lower leagues and also had a spell in Vancouver.

5th February, 1955
FA Amateur Cup 3rd round
Pegasus 4 West Auckland Town 1
Single card issued for this tie. Wycombe beat Pegasus in a replay in the quarter-finals.
5th February, 1983
Chelsea 1 Derby County 3 (Mills, Gemmill pen, Bumstead og)
att: 8,661
I remember this one as I had hoped/planned to head down on the overnight bus to London but there was hooligan activity forecast so I gave it a miss. The low attendance would suggest I was not alone.

Above programme shows action from Chelsea v Palace 6.11.82 (0-0).
Saturday 6th February 1965
Division II
Bury 3 Crystal Palace 1 (Smith)
Gate: 5,580
Bury did the double over Palace in this season in which the Londoners finished 7th while the Shakers ended up safe in 16th. This was one of only 2 Palace games in 64/5 which saw a gate of under 10,000 (the other being at Rotherham), and was the lowest Bury attendance to date.
The 2 sides met for a third occasion in the FA Cup, 3rd round, at Selhurst, Palace winning 5-1. Bury were good enough to print a photo from that game in today's programme. Shaker Ernie Yard (left) signed for Palace at the end of this season.

Hull had some great programme covers down the years.

Healthy attendance for a match between two mid-table sides.

Saturday 7th February 1953
Division III South
Torquay United 1 Crystal Palace 1 (Hancox)
Gate: 6,077
Honours even in this match when at the start of play, United were 20th with 22 points, while Palace were 22nd with 20. Both sides had cracking ends to the season though, with Torquay finishing 12th on 45 pts, and Palace one place behind on 43. Walsall ended bottom having conceded 118 goals, Palace getting 8 of those (Cam Burgess 5), and oddly Walsall did the double over Torquay who failed to score in either match. |

7/2/70 FA Cup 5th Round
QPR 1 Derby 0
Something of an upset here as Rangers were a mid table second division side and Derby would finish in 4th place in the top flight.
QPR's cup run would end at the hands of Chelsea in the next round.

Saturday 8th February 1958
Division III South
Reading 2 Crystal Palace 2 (Cooper, Collins)
Gate: 11,062
Another crucial game in this pivotal season and as the league table shows, a point wasn't of much use to Palace in their forlorn quest to avoid the ignominy of falling into Div 4. Reading finished 5th with Brighton winning the title. You might be interested that Southend and Bournemouth, in the bottom half, both stayed in the 3rd tier, while Shrewsbury and Port Vale from the top half slid down to the fourth level for 58/9.
On the front cover, the photo is of left winger Harry Gunning, signed by the Biscuits from Palace in 1957. He played 63 games for the Glaziers but only a dozen for Reading. Today, 8th Feb, would have been his 89th birthday as he was born on this day in 1932, but he sadly passed away in 2005. |

Thursday 9th February 1961
Surrey Invitation Cup Final (1959/60 season)
Guildford City 0 Crystal Palace 3 (Kerrins 2, Noakes)
Gate: 2,659
A competition run for only 2 seasons in this format, and the reason it was short-lived pretty obvious as the final was carried out 9 months after the end of the season it related to. Nevertheless Palace turned out a strong side, if not quite the XI shown, and were top of Div 4 at the time while their hosts were half way up the Southern League. One of the few bits of silverware to adorn the Palace trophy cabinet. |

9th February, 1957
Halifax Town 1 Derby County 0
att: 8,100
On the face of it, a bit of a surprise result as 15 places separated the two sides in the table but these were pre-substitute days and, in reality, this match was 11 against 9 once a broken ankle and a concussion were taken into account.
Derby only lost one more game all season and ended up top of the table and promoted back to the Second divisoin after two seasons in Div 3 North (two very interesting seasons, though, from a programme collecting point of view).

Saturday 10th February 1962
Division III
Portsmouth 2 Crystal Palace 1 (Byrne)
Gate: 22,541
I love the cover of this one, HMS Victory sitting proudly on the ocean waves. Also an interesting article about Pompey's pre-war player Jimmy Allen.
Pompey won the division and were promoted back to Division II with 65 points, three pts ahead of runners-up Grimsby Town. Palace slipped away badly, not recovering from the loss of talisman Johnny Byrne who joined West Ham about a month after this game - and Palace ended up in 15th with 42 pts, only 9 pts higher than the table shows, and were without a win in their last 13 games. Had that sort of form started earlier they would have been relegated and they began the following season as favourites for the drop, but some wise recruitment overcame that. |
