Tuesday 1st January 1974

Division II

Crystal Palace 1 (Rogers), West Bromwich Albion 0

Gate: 23,338

This game was played on the very first Bank Holiday New Year's Day.

In a season that can only be described as abysmal, Palace strung together a sequence of 7 home games in which they didn't concede a goal, and won 4 of them, including this one. Only problem was, their away form was awful and they'd started the season so badly they were playing catch-up all the time. Big Malcolm Allison was in charge and his casual approach with star players was part of the reason for sliding straight through this division after 4 years in Div 1. Here is Mal and top-scorer Don Rogers just before the season started.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

1 January 1948

Spennymoor United v Workington

North Eastern League

The original owner wrote the score on the team line up page (3 - 2 win for the home team). On the Workington team line up, beside the name Sharp, there is a simple but poignant note “died on field”.

What happened is set out in the next Workington home programme v Sunderland Reserves......

Saturday 2nd January 1960

Division IV

Notts County 7 (seven), Crystal Palace 1 (Woan)

Gate: 15,804

Some interesting and familiar names on the list of goalcorers there. Notts County were big scorers throughout this season, they hit 107 league goals and finished second to Walsall to win promotion to Div 3. Palace scored 84 but finished 10 points behind County in 8th place. Manager George Smith resigned as he said he would if he didn't win promotion. Action below shows Don Roby shooting (and maybe scoring?) for County, with two Palace stalwarts Len Choules (left) and Terry Long challenging. I would love one of these replica shirts!

Saturday 3rd January 1976

FA Cup 3rd round

Scarborough 1 Crystal Palace 2 (Taylor, Evans)

Gate: 8,001

Scorer here was Ian "Taffy" Evans, a centre half signed from QPR in the deal that took Don Rogers on the reverse journey. A gangling player who seemed to be a mistake just waiting to happen when he first joined, he settled down and turned into a very good defender and a real attacking threat from dead balls, so much so that he scored a hat-trick earlier this season. In all he made 163 appearances for Palace with 16 goals. He also played 13 times for Wales but his Palace career ended in a sickening challenge from Fulham's George Best - the crack of a badly broken leg still resonates in my mind. Once he was fit again Palace were well settled in that area (Cannon & Gilbert) so he went off to Barnsley and played another 100 games there, eventually returning to Selhurst as No 2 to Steve Coppell in 1984/5.

3rd January, 1970

Preston NE 1 Derby 1 (Durban)

att: 21,479

Derby won the replay 4-1.

3rd January, 1959

Derby reserves 0 Chesterfield reserves 0

Decent crowd for the local derby - almost 3,000. Derby had won 9 of their previous 11 matches scoring 33 goals in the process.
Not today, though.

Saturday 4th January 1969

FA Cup 3rd round

Charlton Athletic 0 Crystal Palace 0

Gate: 32,334

A goalless draw in front of a large Valley crowd, exceeded by a further 7,000 in the replay which Palace lost 0-2. The programme gives the feel of a pirate but isn't though it carries no date nor fixtures within. It also cost 150% more than the usual CAFC home programme, ie 2s 6d which was extortionate for 1969. The photo below shows John Sewell, Palace right back and captain, flying in on Addick winger Keith Peacock - 2 old teammates - though he was nowhere near ball nor man! Sewell played 185 league games at Charlton before switching to Palace in 1963, and turned out 258 times in all comps for the Glaziers, leading them to the Promised Land of Div 1 in 1969.

4 January 1930

Crystal Palace v Fulham

A 4 - 3 home win. The following week Palace lost 8 - 1 away at Leeds.

The vibrant red cover of the Crystal Palace programme contrasts with the black and white cover used by Burnley 6 years later. Both programmes have excellent content.

4 January 1936

Burnley Reserves v Huddersfield Town Reserves

4/1/64 Division Three
Wrexham 4 Walsall 0
An emphatic win for the hosts, but at the end of the season the visitors would be the happier as Wrexham were relegated and Walsall survived by two points.

Saturday 5th January 1957

FA Cup 3rd round

Millwall 2 Crystal Palace 0

Gate: 26,790

Palace's first appearance in the 3rd round since 1948 ended in failure at New Cross Gate, in front of a healthy crowd, but the signs were there that Palace were on the up, slowly, from the depths of Div 3 S. Manager Cyril Spiers had one eye on Youth and Johnny Byrne, who didn't play here, was just getting in the team at this stage, aged 17. An important signing a year or two later was Roy Summersby who featured here at half-back for the Lions. Terry Long, signed from Wycombe in 1955, also became a fixture at this time and ended up as the club's record appearance holder.
