Happy Christmas to everyone. It has been a terrible year in so many ways. I am fortunate, in that we are in a tier 2 area, so I can have lunch with my children and grandchildren and can still go to the Carlisle v Bolton match on Boxing Day. For those not so fortunate, I hope you find a way to make today as positive as possible.

Here are a few Christmas Day programmes:

1928 Carlisle United v Halifax Town

A 2 - 1 home win in Carlisle’s first league season. The reverse fixture was played in Halifax the following day when Halifax turned the tables and won 5 - 2.

1930 York City v Carlisle United. A heavy 4 - 0 defeat for Carlisle. Again, the reverse fixture was played the following day and Carlisle won 2 - 0.

1933 Stockport County v Carlisle United. A 4 - 0 home win and then a 2 - 2 draw the following day in Carlisle.

1939 Carlisle United v Queen of the South.

Wartime friendly and not too far for Queens to travel as Dumfries is about 35 miles from Carlisle.

1931 Carlisle United Reserves v Workington (1st team)

North Eastern League

1947 Third Lanark v Aberdeen

No exact year for this one but I presume it's sometime in the 1950s.

I do wonder how many people would turn up on Christmas Day to watch Twickenham's third XI play a friendly match. That's real diehard fans for you!

Christmas Day, 1945

Spurs 2 Derby 5 (Doherty 2, Carter, Morrison, Duncan)

Boxing Day, Wednesday 26th December 1962

Division III

Crystal Palace 3 (Burridge, Allen pen, Dowsett), Millwall 0

Gate: 20,414

My first Boxing Day match and memorable for a couple of reasons, other than the result. My whole family attended, including my mum, and it was her last-ever game of football as it snowed, and snowed, and snowed for months with white stuff still on the ground at Easter and Palace not playing another home game until 16th March. My mum, bless her, blamed herself for the weather and so barred herself from attending another game.

As to the game, Palace had started that season very badly, and on this day were 23rd in the table with only 3 wins prior. But signing the likes of Cliff Holton, who made his debut today, was a statement of intent and after this stuffing of their local rivals, won 13 of the remaining 22 games and finished 11th to Millwall's 16th, 4 points behind. In the shot below, Ronnie Allen, another class act, slots a penalty past keeper Reg Davies, with Holton standing hands on hips.

26 December 1925

Hull City v Darlington

A 1 - 1 draw

26 December 1930

Hull City v Halifax Town

Having drawn 1 - 1 on Christmas Day the result here was a bit of a surprise (or maybe Halifax players over indulged) anyway the Boxing Day result was a 10 - 0 home win

26 December 1935

Carlisle Reserves hosted Annfield Plain in the North Eastern League

26 December 1922

North Eastern League

Workington v Carlisle United

First team fixture for both teams

26/12/56 Division Three South
Exeter 2 Plymouth 1
Victory in the derby match for the hosts in what was a poor season for both clubs as they both flirted with having to apply for re-election.
This programme has been signed by Plymouth striker Neil Langman who scored 49 goals in 96 appearances for the club between 1953-1957.
He then moved on to Colchester scoring 49 times in 128 matches before moving to several non league sides.

26/12/59 Division Three
Barnsley 3 Reading 3
A high scoring Boxing Day treat for the fans whose clubs would both end the season in mid table.

26/12/66 Midland Counties League
Long Eaton United v Alfreton Town
No idea of the score, but mid table safety for both clubs in this season.

26/12/94 Division One
WBA 1 Bristol City 0
21,071 at The Hawthorns to see the opening of their new stand at this second tier match.
The Robins would be relegated at the end of the season with the Baggies in 19th place, but ten points clear of the drop.
Some nice images of the stand before and after redevelopment.

Monday 27th December 1954

Division III South

Newport County 0 Crystal Palace 1 (Rutter)

Gate: 13, 025

A very rare double completed by Palace having beaten County 2-1 on Christmas Day. Goalscorer was Brian Rutter, an inside right who played only 3 games - this was his debut. The two sides were locked together in 19th & 20th places at season's end, same points, same wins, draws & losses, but County had a much better goal average. Bristol City were runaway champions and Colchester clung on to the wooden spoon.

27/12/58 Division One
N.Forest 3 Newcastle 0
A season where both sides finished firmly in mid table, but Forest did put the FA Cup in their trophy cabinet.

December 27th, 1948

Gillingham 2 Chelmsford City 0

Southern League

Interesting in that it lists the 27th as Boxing Day. I've read somewhere that associating Boxing Day with the 26th is a relatively modern concept.

10 years later and goals galore at the Vetch

Swansea 4 Derby 4 (Hannigan, Powell, Cargill, Darwin)

att: 19,942

Monday 28th December 1964

Division II

Portsmouth 1 Crystal Palace 1 (Holsgrove)

Gate: 15,450

John Holsgrove started his career at Palace, playing just 22 games and this was one of his 2 goals for the club before heading off to Wolves where he joined up with Ronnie Allen. Palace had beaten Pompey 4-2 on Boxing Day and the Fratton Parkers were bottom of the table at that stage, just recovering to finish a point and a place above the trap door to Div 3. Palace, in their first season back in Div 2 after 40 years in the lower reaches, ended comfortably in 7th place as Newcastle & Northampton won promotion.

28 December 1935

Cardiff City v Crystal Palace

Having played on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, Palace had enjoyed a day off on the 27th before making the journey to South Wales on the 28th. The match ended in a 1 - 1 draw.

On the same day Carlisle Reserves played Gateshead Reserves in the North Eastern League

28/12/59 Division One
Tottenham 1 Leeds 4
A shock result that would cost Spurs dearly at the end of the season as they missed out on the Title to Burnley by just two points, while Leeds were relegated.

28/12/59 Division One
Man City 4 Everton 0
A poor season for both clubs as they both avoided relegation by just three points.

28/12/57 Division One
N. Forest 2 Sheff Wed 3
Wednesday were relegated at the end of the season while Forest found mid table safety.

28/12/63 Division Three
Shrewsbury 1 Wrexham 3
Mid table safety for the Shrews, but relegation loomed for their Welsh visitors.

28/12/57 Football Combination
Southend Reserves v Aldershot Reserves

Saturday 29th December 1945

Division III South (South Region)

Cardiff City 6 Crystal Palace 1 (Kurz)

Gate: c 25,000

Palace had this division sewn up having already won it, but runners-up Cardiff made them pay for their complacency and finished just a point behind.

Palace centre half Bill Bassett joined the club from Cardiff in 1942, playing fairly regularly in war-time football and then a further 74 regular games up to 1949 when he joined Porthmadoc. A Welshman from Brithdir, he served Cardiff through the 1930's so would have been a popular player on his return in this match.

29 December 1951

Workington v Rochdale

Result 1 - 1

First season home for Workington. Not one of the very rare issues from this season, but would probably cost £60 or £70 in the current market. There are a few Workington homes this season that go for around £300.
