16/11/91 FA Cup Round 1
Colchester 0 Exeter 0
Exeter, from Division 3, struggled to overcome their Conference opponents as the replay was also a 0-0 draw and they only progressed with a 4-2 win in the penalty shoot out.
It was all in vain though and they lost to Portsmouth in the next round.

16/11/85 FA Cup Round 1
Windsor & Eton 1 Torquay 1
Torquay, playing in Division 4, struggled with their non league opponents at the first time of asking, but would win the replay 3-0 before losing to Newport in the following round.

16/11/63 Scottish Division Two
Stirling 2 Forfar 1
A battle at the foot of the table in a season where the two clubs would finish in the bottom two positions, both on 20 points.

16 November 1974

Queens Park Rangers v Carlisle United

League Division 1

QPR won 2 - 1

Not a rare programme, but playing for Carlisle that day was Chris Balderstone. Great footballer and test match cricketer. I mention him because today would have been his 80th birthday. Sadly, he died at the age of 59 from prostate cancer.

Derby 2 Birmingham 2 (Napier, Bowers)

S/S issue for Ekco v RN Chatham in the London League. Presumably nobody in attendance was interested in the visitors' lineup.

The home side were, from memory, based in the Southend area.

Friday 17th November 1961

Division III

Coventry City 0 Crystal Palace 2 (Uphill, Allen)

Gate: 13,757

Signing Ronnie Allen in the summer of 61 was a masterstroke by Palace, then aged 32 and after 11 years at WBA where he played over 400 games and scored at a rate of 1/2. Palace had just been promoted for the first time in 40 years and his experience was vital as they sought to establish themselves at a higher level. He played another 109 games at Selhurst, scoring 37 times, and helped the club to another promotion in 63/4 before he left to join the Wolves coaching staff. A class act.

One question here though - why a Friday night? Very good win for Palace at Highfield Road where Coventry were going on the same sort of journey through the divisions as Palace.

17 November 1938

Workington v South Liverpool

English Cup 4th qualifying round replay.

After drawing two all in Liverpool, Workington won through in this replay to face Mansfield in the first round proper.

17 November 1964

Dunfermline Athletic v VFB Stuttgart

Fairs Cup Second Round First Leg

A 1 - 0 home win.

Then something a bit different. I can’t say that I like Rugby Union, but this match was played at Brunton Park.

17 November 1923

Cumberland v Cheshire (Rugby Union County Championship)

17/11/80 Played at St Andrews, Birmingham City
England B v Australia
A 1-0 win for England with the only goal coming from Alan Sunderland.
I assume this was against the full Aussie side as "B" is not entered next to Australia on the programme or in any records I can find.
England fielded a team full of well known players, but very few of them would go on to make any major impact at full International level.

November 17, 1965
Weiner Austria 1-0 Chelsea - Inter Cities Fairs Cup.
18 page programme

Chelsea lost this game in Austria by a single goal but won the second leg at Stamford Bridge 2-0 and therefore qualified for the next round.
It is my understanding that this programme is one of the hardest to find Chelsea away programmes. Can anyone confirm that fact for me !

That's a great cover!

Could be you need to post this question on the Rare Programme thread as not everyone will read this Historical thread.

Australia played England in a full international in May 1980 and 9 of the starting line up are included in the squad above so looks like their "A" team against England "B" team

Ekco football team was part of a big business at the time as can be seen here

18th November 1972

Division I

Crystal Palace 2 (Craven 2), Leeds United 2 (Giles, Jones)

Gate: 38,167

Some fascinating insights from boss Bert Head on a recent trip to Tehran to play a friendly.

And from the game, the moment that will live in the memory of everyone present on that day. John Craven had scored twice and Norman Hunter knew only one way of thanking him for that. He bit his legs.

Craven passed away shockingly early in 1996. I wonder if he spent 24 years at the pearly gates waiting for Norman. RIP to them both.

18 November 1933

Birmingham City v Sunderland

League Division One:

Result: 1 - 1

18 November 1950

Third Lanark v Dundee

League Division A

18 November 1950

New Brighton v Scunthorpe United

Division 3 North

Last season for New Brighton and first season for Scunthorpe. The half time scoreboard man was obviously kept very busy.

Result: 1 - 2

18/11/78 Division Four
Wigan 3 Reading 0
A thumping win for the hosts in their debut season as a League club.
Wigan finished in 6th place, just missing out on promotion, but Reading would end the season as Champions.

18/11/80 Under 21s International
England 5 Switzerland 0
Played at Portman Road, Ipswich.
A thumping victory for England who got the job done early and took a four goal lead into the break.
Gary Owen, Justin Fashanu, Paul Goddard, David Hodgson and a Swiss own goal accounted for the scoring.
A line up full of very good players with many who would win full caps, but only Chris Woods would go on to win a pile of caps for the full International side.

Ray Middleton in goal for Chesterfield would later play for Derby. Had his hands insured for £2,000 when he was combining football with a job as a miner.

Man City reserves 2 Derby reserves 1 (Barry Butlin)

Stan Bowles in the City XI.

Saturday 19th November 1949

Division III South

Norwich City 2 (Rowlands 2), Crystal Palace 0

Gate: 23,558 (or 22,941 per the original programme owner)

Programme has punched holes, (neat) writing on face, no staple. Other than that, it's fine by me. Quite a hard one to find, I think.

Oddity here. The goalscorer, City #6 Trevor Rowlands, was apparently usually a full back, and in 4 years at Carrow Road played a total of 10 games, scoring twice. Trust Palace to fall victim to him!

For Palace this was easily their best post-war Div III S season, finishing 7th with 44 points. In fact, this was the only season after WW2 that they ended in the top half, until 1958/9 in Div 4.

17 November 1903

Newcastle United A v Shaddongate United.

Shaddongate is an area of Carlisle and in November 1903 the team travelled over to the North East to play a friendly v Newcastle United A (reserve or possibly even third team). I don’t know the result of the match. Six months later Shaddongate United changed its name to Carlisle United.

19 November 1921

Cardiff City v Everton

This is a fabulous programme; jam-packed with interesting reading. Great to have with full cover as most Cardiff that turn up from this era are ex-bound without covers.

19 November 1949

Rochdale v Carlisle United

Division 3 North

A 1 - 0 home win and standard Rochdale cover.

While that was being played Carlisle Reserves entertained Darlington Reserves in the North Eastern League

19 November 1949

Aberdeen v Dunfermline Athletic

This was a reserve fixture played in C Division

19/11/55 Division One
Preston 0 Arsenal 1
Cliff Holton nets the winner on the day while Preston survive relegation at the end of the season by just one point.

19/11/66 Division One
Sheff Wed 1 Tottenham 0
A sixth match on the trot without a win for Spurs which was a run that would ultimately cost them dearly as they were to miss out on the Title by just four points.

Awkward tie for Derby in the First Round of the FA Cup against one of the most successful amateur clubs in the country.

Tie ended in a 2-2 draw and, somehow, 9,818 squeezed into Millfield to watch. Four days later, Derby won the replay 5-1.

Back when I started collecting for real, this was one of those Derby aways that seemed to be on all our wants lists. Never made much sense to me, did that. Big crowd expected, you'd think they'd have printed more progs and they'd end up being comparatively easy to find. But no.
