Real Madrid 5 Derby 1 (Charlie George)
att: 120,000
Bit of a bodyblow having been 4-1 up from the first leg. Still (and likely to remain) the biggest crowd Derby have ever played in front of. Never seen any footage from this match, perhaps no cameras were there. Seems odd, though.
I like the self-deprecating wording on the cover of this Cefn Druids programme - "left out of Wrexham and down a bit"!

Wednesday 6th November 1974
Division III
Blackburn Rovers 1 Crystal Palace 1 (P Hinshelwood)
Gate: 13,612
A couple of pages from the fascinating files of Tony Pullein.
And the first goal of Paul Hinshelwood's career, in his 4th match. Other than here, his time up front wasn't a success, so Paul soon dropped back to midfield and then to full back where he excelled and played 319 games with 29 goals before a move to rising Oxford. I played against him at school, we probably lost but I really don't remember. But I once opened the batting with his dad, Wally (an ex-pro). And we both scored 50's!
After 2 successive relegations with Malcolm Allison at the tiller, Palace ended this season in 5th place while Rovers were divisional champions, a point ahead of Plymouth.
Incidentally, my previous posting was the wonderful Gloucester City programme, probably the best looking prog in my collection. Well this Blackburn job could well be the ugliest! |

Saturday 7th September 1964
Division II
Southampton 0 Crystal Palace 1 (Burridge)
Gate: 20,161
An intereresting historical article by "Onlooker".
And this was my first ever away game. My dad worked with the dad of one of my school mates, we were 8. His dad was going and his lad persuaded him to take him, then my dad coerced my mum to let me go with them - my dad couldn't go for some reason. We went by train and there were 2 blokes with a trolley and loads of boxes of programmes, walking up and down the train. I had about 6d to spare so I bought 2 of them for 3d each and my days as a collector began. One little story. We were standing near the front and on the track just the other side of the hoarding was a bench with a row of kids sitting on it. I didn't know who they were till I said of the Saints No 8 George O'Brien "He's useless!" One little lad turned round and said "OI! That's my dad!" and my mate came between us to stop him hitting me and who knows, maybe vice versa.
And here's my first CPFC hero. Peter Burridge scored with a diving header and I've loved him ever since. Even more so since I met him in 2000 and have been lucky enough to catch up with him 3 or 4 times since. A truly lovely man and still playing a few holes of golf at age 86.

7th November 1953
Forest 4 Derby 2 (McLaren, Wilkins)
att: 31,397
The first league meeting between the two local rivals since 1926.
I'm still not sure what to make of that advert on the front cover.

Tuesday 8th November 1988
GM Vauxhall Conference
Sutton Utd 1 Newport County 1 (Sugrue)
Gate: 924
County played their last GMVC game on 11th Feb, and League Cup game on 21st Feb, but then were wound up on 27th Feb for failing to fulfill fixtures and their records, including this game, were expunged. A sad ending to a proud club but today, 32 years on, fans can see the Phoenix club on top of League Two and in the 2nd round of the FA Cup. This is what Bury AFC fans have to cling to. |

Three random issues from 8 November. There is no particular story to go with any of them. They are just the first three from this date that I found while looking through some boxes.
8 November 1930
Brentford v Portsmouth
A reserve fixture in the London Combination
8 November 1952
Sheffield United v Southampton
8 November 1958
Dundee v Stirling Albion

8/11/52 Division One
Arsenal 2 Middlesbrough 1
Victory for the home side on their way to winning the Title on goal average from Preston.
8/11/58 Division One
Nottingham Forest 4 Manchester City 0
A spanking for City who would just avoid relegation by one point.
Forest would finish in mid table, but with the FA Cup in the trophy cabinet.
8/11/58 Division Two
Barnsley 2 Stoke 1
A rare victory in this season for the hosts who would finish bottom of the table and be relegated.
8/11/58 Division Three
Doncaster 1 Halifax 2
The hosts ended up in 23rd position in the table and were relegated which was a fate that this brilliant programme cover didn't deserve, although I've never understood why the player is carrying the ball.

Saturday 9th November 1968
Division II
Oxford United 0 Crystal Palace 2 (Kember, Woodruff)
Gate: 10,444
Good win for Palace who secured their first ever promotion to Div I in this season. This was the 2 clubs' first league meeting following United's promotion in 67/8 as Div III champions. They narrowly avoided relegation finishing a place and 3 points above Bury who were in 21st place.
Bobby Woodruff, signed from Wolves in June 1966, scored 48 league goals in 125 games for Palace where he re-joined the manager who discovered him at Swindon, Bert Head. That was by far his best scoring return at any of his 5 clubs. Possessed an amazing long throw too, one of the first to exploit that. A neat, skilful player with 2 good feet and decent in the air.

Highland League
Deveronvale v Rothes
Deveronvale are based in Banff in Aberdeenshire. Back in 1957 they issued a 4 page programme with lots of small adverts: team lines in the centre (surrounded by adverts) and a small editorial piece on the back page (again lots of small ads) |

9/11/54 Friendly
Arsenal 1 Spartak 2
One of those high profile visits from the Russians that brought a lot of attention in the 1950's
.
While I was searching for the score, I found this short Pathe News clip of the match.
The crowd, the challenges, the excitement at scoring in a friendly......those were the days. I think VAR would have given a penalty though

Man Utd 4 Derby 1 (Carter)
att: 57,517
Having conceded four goals here, there were four defensive changes for the next game v Liverpool - where a further four goals were conceded. Next game at Bolton saw a 1-5 defeat before everything clicked and they won 6 of the next 7.
Looking closely at the line-ups for those games, I was initially surprised to see that it was only once Peter Doherty wasn't in the XI that things started to improve. But this was the period when there was a degree of strife behind the scenes between Doherty and the club and goes to show that bad blood in the dressing room had as detrimental an effect then as it does now.

Great cover Sharrow!!
Saturday 10th November 1945
Division III South (South Region)
Crystal Palace 10 (ten) (Blackman 3, Kurz 3, Robson 2, Stamps 1, Wilson), Swindon Town 1
Gate: c 10,000
Post-war fun & games at the Empire...
Palace won this league which ran from 25th August to 29th December, and Swindon finished half-way in the 11-team division. All clubs were heavily reliant on loaning players as many of their own men were still overseas or recovering. Derby County's Jackie Stamps was one such player in the home line-up, he played 5 times in this period. Sadly I don't have a photo of him but he was a Derby post-war legend, scoring 100 times for the Rams. |

Pete, it looks like it would have been a great night at the Croydon Empire.
In the modern day, Cillas football dogs would be hot favourites to win Britain’s Got Talent.
