Came across a letter I'd written to a dealer in August 1978. He'd sent it back along with the 4 programmes I'd ordered. The prices, though!

35/6 Birmingham v WBA £5.00
38/9 West Ham v WBA £3.50
38/9 Sheff Utd v WBA £5.00
35/6 Portsmouth v WBA £5.00

I know progs were cheaper back then but those do seem very low even given it was 42 years ago. Or am I mistaken? Could you pick up pre-wars for a fiver back then?

Not a West Brom collector so thinking I must have spotted a bargain.

Not sure what dealer it was but I'd added on 20p for his next list.

£5 in 1978 is about £30 now. Not an expert but still seems a good price for a pre-war programme!!

Brilliant

Do you still happen to own these?

Im sure you would make a bit more than a fiver on each of them now!

Would the dealer have been Steve Earl?

In 1977 I think my soon to be wife bought me a Liverpool v Cardiff City 1921/22 programme, City's 2nd season in the FL and 1st year in the 1st Division. Cost an extortionate £10.

Hull based BPCC had postal auctions in the 70s and I bid 75p for Carlisle v Rotherham 37-38. This turned out to be the winning, and almost certainly, the only bid. The programme was sent to me with a note to remind me that the minimum bid for pre-war programmes was £3. I had not been aware of this and I always thought it was very kind of them to honour my offer.

In 1975 I bought the 1923 FA Cup Final for £25, it has a cellotaped spine and yes, I do still own it!
