1/9/53 Division One
Arsenal 1 Sheffield United 1
A poor start for the Gunners saw them fail to win in the first eight matches.
They would finish the season in 12th place while The Blades just survived the drop finishing one place outside the relegation zone.

Halifax Town v Carlisle United

Bill Shankly at centre forward for Carlisle

It would have been Bill Shankly’s 107th birthday today. Here is a picture of him as Carlisle manager

2/9/61 Division One
Bolton defeat Arsenal 2-1 in a season that saw both clubs finish in mid table.

2/9/59 Division One
Manchester City take the points from Fulham with a 3-1 victory, but the visitors would have the better season finishing in 10th position while the hosts struggled to a 16th place finish.

2/9/78 Division Four
Wigan 2 Newport 3
The first season in the League for the hosts started badly and this was their third defeat on the trot.
Newport had already lost their opening three matches, so this looked like a battle of potential relegation fodder at the time.
Both sides turned their fortunes around though and only just missed out on promotion at the end of the season finishing in 6th & 8th positions.

Tuesday 2nd September 1980

League Cup 2nd round, 2nd leg

Crystal Palace 2 Bolton Wanderers 1 (5-1 on aggregate)

Gate: 15,536

Wraparound cover, action showing Ian Walsh & Gerry Francis against Nottingham Forest from 1979/80.

Nightmare season for Palace but surprisingly easy winners against 2nd Division Bolton. Francis & Clive Allen got the goals in the 2nd leg. Terry Venables was manager for another few weeks before departing for QPR and taking a few players and staff with him. Good riddance, some might say.

3 September 1921

North Eastern League

Workington v South Shields

This was Workington’s first season after the club reformed in 1921. The club had disbanded in around 1910 or 1911. The new club played in the North Eastern League until they were elected to the Football League in 1951.

South Shields won the match by 2 goals to 1.

3 September 1928

Bradford City v Carlisle United.

This was Carlisle’s fourth match of their first season in the football league. They would have been confident going into the match as two days earlier they had beaten Hartlepools 8 - 0 (still their highest league win); however, they were beaten 4 - 2 by City.

3/9/60 Division Two
Bristol Rovers 1 Ipswich Town 1
Ipswich would go on to lift the Title while Rovers struggled early on in failing to win in their first eight matches, but rallied to finish 17th.

3/9/58 Division 3
Reading 3 Southend 0
Decent season for both clubs finishing 6th & 8th respectively, but both well short of the promotion picture.

3/9/75 International Friendly
Switzerland 1 England 2
A blistering start by England with Kevin Keegan and Mike Channon scoring in the first twenty minutes and also seeing a Keegan penalty saved.
The Swiss pulled one back through Kurt Muller on the half hour mark.
This was Gerry Francis' first match as England Captain.

SATURDAY 3rd SEPTEMBER 1960
Tottenham Hotspur entertain Manchester Utd at White Hart Lane and 55455 see Spurs triumph 4-1 to start the season with 5 straight wins.

Spurs would go on to get 12 straight wins, a draw against Manchester City broke the sequence, and establish a solid base to go on and complete the League & Cup 'double'.

3rd September 1958

League Division IV

Chester 3 Crystal Palace 2

Gate: 7,993

Palace scored lots of goals in the inaugural 4th Division season, but conceded just as many with a defence with as many holes in it as the Chester advertising content. Palace ended up in 7th and their hosts at 13th.

Bugle's first home game after stepping up to the South-Western League.
10/6d for a season ticket - that wouldn't even get you one packet of crisps nowadays.

4/9/56 Division One
Arsenal 1 Preston 2
Decent seasons for both clubs as they ended up 5th and 3rd respectively.

4/9/61 Division One
Blackpool 2 West Ham 0
Unhappy trip to the coast for the Hammers, but they had the better season finishing 8th compared to Blackpool's 13th.

4/9/58 Division Two
Orient 2 Ipswich 0
Mid table season for both clubs finishing in 17th and 16th respectively.
