Willesden v Old Hendonians
Home club played in the Spartan League alongside the likes of Marlow, Hemel Hempstead and Headington as well as the evocatively named Wycombe Redfords and Chelsea Mariners.
Never seen progs from the latter two clubs but if anyone has......

Saturday 5th October 1957
Division III South
Northampton Town 1 Crystal Palace 2 (Cooper 2)
Gate: 7,594
George Cooper, scorer of 2 goals here and 17 in 25 games in that all-important season which saw the top 12 go into Div 3 and the bottom half into Div 4. Palace ended 4 points behind Colchester who were 12th and just made it to Div 3. You have to wonder how Palace would have fared had Cooper played any games at all after 1st March, when he scored in a 1-1 draw with Aldershot and didn't play again. In those last 13 games, Palace won 4 and lost 6 with 3 draws. A few goals from George may well have got us into Div 3. Here he is in 1956 and that's not a third leg, it's Bernie Harrison's!

Barrow v Doncaster Rovers
Rovers won this match 1 - 0.
I wonder if any old members of the Eighth Army bought tickets for the “Smoking concert” at the Royal Albert Hall.

5/10/57 Division One
Birmingham 4 Man City 0
5/10/88 UEFA Cup 1st Round 2nd Leg
Dynamo Dersden 2 Aberdeen 0 agg 2-0
The end of the road before it had really started for the Dons at the hands of a German team that would finally lose in the Semi Finals to fellow countrymen Stuttgart.
5/7/77 Cup Winners Cup 1st Round 2nd Leg
Man Utd 2 St Etienne 0 agg 3-1
Goals from Stuart Pearson and Steve Coppell see the reds safely through the tie, but they would fall in the next round to Porto.
The match with St Etienne had to be played 200 miles away from Old Trafford due to United fans smashing up France in the first leg and was played at Home Park, Plymouth.
United provided a closed circuit beam back to Old Trafford to cater for their fans.
These are the match programme and also the beam back one.

6th October 2001
England v Greece (World Cup Qualifier)
Beckham's 32nd attempt at a free kick deep into injury time sent the nations media into unbridled raptures as we drew against mighty Greece and were we marching off to the Land of the rising sun to bring home the cup.
Sven's boys had condemned those nasty Germans to a play off against Ukraine, (at least they knew the way).
What could possibly go wrong? The Germans made the final and Sven paid the price for having a geriatric goalkeeper who was beaten by a 45 yard free kick.

Saturday 6th October 1945
Division III South (South region)
Exeter City 0 Crystal Palace 1 (Blackman)
Gate: c. 11,000
Does anyone know how Exeter's Norwegian got on?
Jack Blackman got the goal, one of 55 goals he scored for Palace in 107 games either side of WW2. Having signed from QPR in 1935, he left Palace in May 1946, joining Guildford City, but returned a few years later to become trainer for quite a while - I'm not sure for how long. This is him in about 1952, when Laurie Scott was player/manager.

Wednesday 7th October 1959
Division IV
Bradford PA 3 Crystal Palace 1 (Summersby)
Gate: 3,220
Great cover on a nice "little" programme. The fourth consecutive defeat for Palace in a season which ended disappointingly in 8th place, with manager George Smith resigning as he said he would if his team didn't get promoted. Avenue picked up to finish 11th, only a point behind the Londoners. |

7/10/92 Football Combination
Exeter v Cheltenham
Seeing this one today brought back quite a few memories for me.
Not about the match, because I wasn't there, but about the Football Combination and the League sponsors.
When I was too young to travel to away matches with Tottenham, I would always go to The Lane and watch the reserves play in the Combination.
There were normally some stars coming back from injury etc and the games were almost always very competitive.
The sponsors shown on this programme were a London/Essex based paper merchants originally known as Everard Ovenden, but later became Neville Ovenden.
Ovenden's loved football and sponsored Orient for a while as well as the Combination.
I was a printer in East London from the late 70's and through the eighties and as Print Room Manager, I had a lot of dealings with EO and even put a five a side team together from our factory to play in a tournament they organised in Billericay.
I was the only one that played in a team at the time and the rest were unfit and overweight and we didn't do too well, but it was great fun.

Loughborough Corinthians left the Midland League in 1933 and as far as I can see are defunct.

Coltness United are no more - they merged with Carluke in 2006, the new club going by the name of Newmains United, competing in the West of Scotland Lge.

Workington v Whitehaven Athletic.
A local derby as the two towns are just 8 miles apart. The score is noted on the line up page and Workington won 3 - 2.

8/10/97 Friendly
Bournemouth 1 West Ham 1
Nothing particularly special about this one in the run of the mill design, but the match was arranged as a celebration of Bournemouth fighting off bankruptcy thanks largely to the efforts of the supporter base and the story of the battle to survive is diarised inside.
