I uploaded the covers of each issue to Flickr.

Great magazine - I can lose myself for hours going through them at random.

He tends to be forgotten nowadays, but Charles Buchan was one of the greats. From what l have read , he was a fabulous footballer and when he retired he set up the greatest football magazine of all time. The office that Buchan and his team of journalists worked from was absolutely dilapidated . John Thompson, one of the first writers for the magazine said: “ At first there was only one chair in the office. We were hard up for furniture for a long time. We would take it in turns to perch round a trestle table on orange boxes and would courtesy leave the chair for any visitor who proved himself healthy enough to climb the steep stairs to our new home. To avoid frost-bite Charles Buchan would wrap newspapers round his legs. The paper rustled disconcertingly whenever he moved”. He also did a lot to try and get poor kids into football abroad. Far lesser men than Buchan have received knighthoods and all that stuff!

About 5 years ago, I started listing all the major articles and photos per issue with the idea of creating a sort of index-cum-database as there's so much contained within these magazines it's a veritable history of the game.
At least this thread has reminded me and I can resume the process.

Trouble is that once I pick one up I get engrossed and start digging into players and matches I read about so one issue takes about a fortnight to do.

So I should be finished by about 2031.....

The daddy of the modern football magazine, without question. I would suggest the most sought after one is the March 1958 issue which went to production as news of the Munich crash was breaking, particularly if you find one with the 'obituary slip' which was included with it.

Cover pic was Duncan Edwards, and sadly by the time the issue hit the newsagents' shelves he'd passed away from his injuries.

The first four issues from late 1951 are quite collectable, and the ones around the time of the 1966 World Cup are popular too. Where I list what I have available in the http://www.nwmfootball.com/classic-magazines/ section, I give details of the colour poster content, as I find this is one of the key reasons collectors still want them.

Personally, I think the decision to switch to the Football Digest version in the autumn of 1973 was a disasterous one, while the power crises of late 1973/early 1974 knackered the circulation for both this, and it's weekly sister "Goal", which went under at the same time (last issue of Goal is dated June 1st 1974).

Some of the advertisements from the magazine in the 1950s were great as well, and in some cases life changing. Rumour has it that a teenage Shakin Stevens , a subscribers to the mag,, didn’t have a clue how to Rock ‘n Roll until he saw this add . He then sent off for this course and in the comfort of his own homes learnt how to Rock ‘n Roll. If I’d have been old enough l would have written off to The Posh for a trial !

One or two issues down the years included freebies - such as, I believe, a World Cup wheel thing that you rotated to show upcoming fixtures.
May have been 1966, may have been 1970.

They might be quite rare but I found the hardest issues to find in decent nick were the Football Digest ones right at the end of the run as the low-grade glue they used on the spine meant the pages would start to come loose.
