Saturday 10th September 1960
Division IV
Wrexham 1 (Metcalf) Crystal Palace 2 (Byrne, Gavin)
Gate: 10,431
Early season league table showing Posh at the top, where they stayed. Palace were runners-up (both top sides scored 100+ league goals) and Northampton & Bradford PA were also promoted. Chester picked up the wooden spoon. Hosts Wrexham ended in 16th. Lovely shade of green by the way. |

Friday night football at the County Ground 55 years ago.
And a notable one for the Cobblers' Barry Lines who became the first player in history to score a league goal in all 4 divisions for the same club.
Northampton 3 (Lines, Robson 2)
West Brom 4 (Hope, Astle 3)

Saturday 11th September 1948
Division III South
Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic 2 Crystal Palace 0
Gate: 17,517
A basic 8pp programme with little content. The home side had a good season, finishing third. Palace ended 22nd and last and sought re-election for ths first time in their history. But not the last.............. The first decade after WW2 was not a happy time for my club. |

11 September 1929
Crystal Palace v Southend United
A great, vivid red, cover makes Palace issues from this period stand out.
A 2 - 1 away win here meant Southend did the double over Palace as they also beat them in the reverse fixture 9 days earlier.

11/9/57 Division One
Man City 2 Preston 0
Despite poor starts to the season by both clubs (City lost four of their first eight matches and Preston four of their first six), they rallied and went on to finish 5th and 2nd respectively.
11/9/94 Charity Match
Gainsborough Trinity Veterans v Leeds United Veterans
Plenty of well known stars on the Leeds teamsheet for this one and a certain Mr Warnock on the opposition side.

Derby County 2 (Groves, Gallacher) Preston NE 0
att: 21,299
The printer just about managed to fit the Preston forward line into the space available.
League Cup 2nd Round
Portsmouth 1 Derby County 5 (Hector 2, Lee, Rioch, Roberts og)
att: 13,582
The South Coast wasn't so productive for the Rams in the next round when they went down to a 0-5 defeat at Southampton.

Monday 12th September 1960
Division IV
Peterborough United 4 Crystal Palace 1 (Heckman)
Gate: 21,171 (ground record?)
You can see why Posh were selected given their consistency through the 50's.
Both sides were promoted but Posh did the double over Palace with this thumping victory at London Road. They got 66 points to Palace's 64 so it was pretty close at the end, and they also scored 134 goals to the Londoners' 110. And all in their debut season too - some introduction! Given that, it's almost unbelievable that they had to wait until 1992/3 to reach the second tier. As for Palace, they've never been in the bottom tier since, having been in it since 1925/6. |

12/9/59 Division One
Arsenal 3 Manchester City 1
A struggle for both clubs this season with the hosts only surviving relegation by five points while the visitors cut it closer and were three points from the drop.
12/9/59 Division One
Sheffield Wednesday 5 Blackpool 0
A bit of a spanking for the Seasiders.
12/9/56 Division One
Sheffield Wednesday 5 Cardiff 3
Sounds like a thriller at Hillsborough, but Cardiff's leaky defence would see them relegated at the end of the season.

Carlisleprogs, you have got some fantastic programmes in your collection. Out of interest , have you got any Carlisle with Shankly in the line- up before he moved to Preston? I’ve never seen one. |

One of my favourite cover designs for sure.

I have found a couple of Reserve homes with him ( I think) at right half. The first team programmes I have found from 32/3 are all before Christmas and he is not in the line up. I should have a couple from later in the season - will keep looking.
Anyway, without hi-jacking the thread here are images of the two reserve homes with line up pages: Blyth Spartans and Sunderland Res
