7 September 1912

Sheffield Wednesday Reserves v Chesterfield Town.

A Chesterfield supporting friend still calls Chesterfield “town”. This incarnation of the Chesterfield club ended in liquidation in 1915. The club was reformed in 1919 as Chesterfield Municipal before changing its name to Chesterfield FC in 1920.

Anyone fancy a well paid job at the pit? Apply here. How times change.

And did anyone reading ever have a pint of Whitworth's?

Harry Gregg in goal, Billy Liddell scored - some household names in Div 2.

Tuesday 9th September 1975

Football League Cup, 2nd round

Doncaster Rovers 2 (O'Callaghan at least 1), Crystal Palace 1 (J Johnson)

And a young referee in his second FL season

I passed my driving test a few weeks earlier, and made my maiden venture in my first car (Morris Minor 1000) to an away game, with 3 mates for company. Cars may come and go - club allegiance doesn't - and nor do rubbish away results. They come with the territory.

With their minds, perhaps, on the club's first ever European game in 4 days time, the first team go down to a 1-2 defeat at The Hawthorns in front of 17.262. Roy McFarland scored for Derby.

Back at The Baseball Ground, the reserves hammer Burnley 4-1 in front of 1,900. Goals from Jim Walker, Roger Davies and a brace from John Sims.

10/9/52 Division One
Arsenal 3 Portsmouth 1
The hosts went on to lift the Title on goal average from Preston, with Pompey a lowly 17th.

10/9/55 Division One
Tottenham 3 Arsenal 1
Two goals from Alfie Stokes help Spurs beat their rivals.

10/9/58 Division One
Manchester City 1 Luton 1
Tough season for both clubs with City surviving relegation by just one point in 20th position while the Hatters were just six points better off in 17th.

10/9/86 European Championship Qualifier
Finland 1 Wales 1
Oxford's Neil Slatter rescues a point for the Welsh, but neither side would make it out of the group which was won by Denmark.
