SATURDAY 19th August 1961
Newly promoted Ipswich Town travel to Bolton for a first ever Division 1 game and come away with a point in a 0-0 draw:
Ipswich would go on to win the Championship after promotion, only 5 teams have ever achieved this feat, the others being Liverpool 1904/05, Everton 1931/32, Spurs in 1950/51 and Forest 1977/78

No chance of such an event in the Premiership era!!!!!! |

Only 3 weeks after the World Cup Final and all three Hammers played. Wouldn’t happen today ! |

It's not a programme obviously, but still an interesting item.
21/8/79
After six years away, top flight football returned to Selhurst Park when Crystal Palace drew 0-0 with Southampton.
Palace got off to a great start and were unbeaten in their first nine matches that season and the "Team of the 80's" tag was put around their neck.
Things balanced out as the season went on and they would finish in 13th position. Saints ended up in 8th.

Spennymoor v Carlisle United Reserves.
The North Eastern League issues from this period are generally scarce so I am pleased to have even a creased copy. |

It’s been a while...
21/08/99
Leatherhead v Cowes Sports (FACp)
This is what counts as glamour at our level - a day out at famous old cup fighters Leatherhead. No expectation of a win, and I don’t think they expected much from us, either. We won, 1-0!

21 AUGUST 1971 - Another neutral venue game as Leeds entertain Wolves at Leeds Road Huddersfield:
This game was 1 of 4 Leeds played away from Elland Road after FA punishment following the infamous West Brom 'offside goal' game in April 1971.
Leeds also played Crystal Palace (Huddersfield), Newcastle Utd (Hillsborough) and Tottenham (Boothferry Park - Hull)

Palace got off to a great start and were unbeaten in their first nine matches that season and the "Team of the 80's" tag was put around their neck.
To finish the story, the programme cover shows below together with a double page of stats from the 1978/9 season which saw Palace promoted as Div II champions.
"Team of the 80's" was fanciful but if you look at the 78/9 Results you can see that in 19 games after the turn of the year, Palace only lost 1, conceding just 6 goals, but scored only 17. That shows why they were successful, but also what they really needed to become a real threat to the 1st Division. Sadly signing Gerry Francis and Mike Flanagan didn't look to be the solution then or now, 40 years later. One was flabby and nowhere near Div 1 level. The other, Francis, was also flabby but a great player who'd had an injury or two too many. Signing a decent forward didn't happen for another 12 months and when it did, arguably the best player ever seen at Selhurst Park, Kenny Sansom, went in the opposite direction. And soon after the "Team of the 80's" was no more.

22nd August 1970
Sheffield United v Swindon Town
United were in turmoil. Gil Reece had handed in a transfer request and a training ground row between Colin Addison and trainer Cec Coldwell meant manager John Harris axed Addison and John Flynn and brought in Geoff Salmons and Billy Dearden.
Before the game visiting manager Fred Ford had stated that Woodward wouldn't cause much trouble. In the 59th minute Woodward cracked in a spectacular volley from Reece's head on. Don Rogers had set up the equaliser for Peter Noble, but Noble missed an open net shortly afterwards, and Colquhoun headed in off the underside of the bar following a Woodward free-kick to get the winner.
