Wednesday 29 August 1959 - Luton Toiwn v Leeds Utd
After 2 Home defeats in the season opening fixtures 15822 see Leeds win 1-0 at Kenilworth Road with a goal from Centre Foward Don Revie.

Luton, 1959 FA Cup Finalists and Leeds face a season long struggle and both are relegated.
Revie goes on to become Leeds Manager in April 1961 and transforms the club whilst Luton's downward spiral through the League continues with further relegations in 1963 and 1965,

Monday 29th August 1960
Northampton Town welcome Workington to the County Ground for a Division 4 fixture.
The Cobblers win the game, one of 9 wins in the first 10 games. A solid base ending in a 3rd place finish and promotion.

Northampton went onto further promotions in 1963 and 1965 to start the 1965/66 season in Division 1.
However, the fall from grace was even swifter as relegations in 1967 and 1969 saw The Cobblers back in Division 4 for the 1969/70 Season.

29th August 1989

Plymouth Argyle v Cardiff City

A 2-0 win for Cardiff but they still went out after losing the first leg 3-0.

Lovely balmy evening, I was in my first year of Long distance lorry driving. Taxi to home park, Fish and chips afterwards and a Pint before last orders 5 minute walk from the lorry. Good times.

30/8/52 Division One
Arsenal 1 Sunderland 2
Arsenal would go on to win the Title on Goal Average from Preston.
Sunderland finished in 9th place, but became a bogey team for Arsenal by not only doing the double over them that season, but winning six league matches on the trot against them in a run that didn't end until 1955.

Saturday 30th August 1975

League Division III

Crystal Palace 3 Colchester United 2

Gate: 13,713

Top of the league Palace prevailed thanks to a hat-trick from centre back Ian Evans. That doesn't happen very often. I know I missed this game playing cricket.

Interesting interview with Kenny Sansom, then aged just 16, and soon to become one of the best players in the club's history.

31/8/57 Division One
Arsenal v Luton Town
A 2-0 win for the Gunners on the day, but Luton would have the better season finishing in 8th, four places ahead of Arsenal.

31/8/60 Division Three
Barnsley and Reading share the points in a 1-1 draw.
Barnsley ended the season in 8th position, while Reading languished in 18th, just safe of the drop zone.

31/8/74 Division Four
Torquay United take the points against Cambridge United with a 1-0 win, but the visitors had the better season finishing just three points out of the promotion places in 6th. Torquay finished in a mid table 14th.

MONDAY 31st AUGUST 1959
Newly relegated entertain Sunderland at Villa Park - a 3-0 win contributes to a solid start where 8 wins in the first 10 matches provides a solid base that sees Villa bounce back to the top Division as Champions in May 1960

Villa, along with West Brom, used to regularly issue double-header programmes.

Thursday 31st August 1961

League Division III

Notts County 0 Crystal Palace 0

Gate: 11,633

And some interesting comments from County manager, Frank Hill, who would probably find himself in the dock today.

Palace, newly promoted, made a good start to life in Div III but tailed off to end up 15th. County, 100 years old, celebrated by finishing in 13th place.

Opening day of the first post-war season.

Sunderland 3 Derby 2 (Stamps, Doherty pen)
att: 48,466

Rams' #7 (Wilf Walsh) only played 4 League games for the club - the three from the aborted 39/40 season plus this one.

Flimsy 4 page programme. Not easy to track down a copy.
