If Oxford University counts too, possibly their oldest away issue is from 1902 against Ferencváros in Budapest. |
If a programme exists, then it counts!
Did you know that the University team won 15-0?!! |

Earliest know forign trip for Rovers is when we went on tour to Holland in 1930. We played the National team in Amsterdam on the 10th of November and a side called The Swallows in The Hague on the 11th. I believe these two pictures are from the first game,
Final pic is the back of the 2nd card. Don't suppose anyone can translate it for me?

From a free image translation website:
There are goal defenders who love the ball with
punch both fists away at the same time. This is not good. One sees
at our peak a match of a Dutch team against
the Bristol Rovers in Amsterdam. The Rover's goal defender
stumps the ball with one hand, with the other his body
protective of attacks.
One can reach with one hand beyond two. Tries
You try that ! It always makes a few decimal places-
peel ; this can be of decisive influence. The
once again, how the goal defender jumps with stretched
knees. If he pulls the knees in the height, then he can use it.
seriously injure an opponent. This can be done by
referee as dangerous game to be punished |

For Wolves the oldest I know of is when they toured Sweden at the end of the 1945-46 season. An issue for the game against Gestrikland was for sale on Sporting Golds auctions in April 2018. Unfortunately it went for more than my pockets could stretch to.
Wolves also made a couple of trips to Germany during that season to meet Army teams. I know for certain a teamsheet/programme was issued for the game against Combined Services on 26th September 1945 and suspect one would have been issued for the game against the British Armey on 3rd April[/img] _________________ http://willjam100.wix.com/wolvesindetail |

Newcastle United's is much earlier than 1952 - there are programmes from the Irish tour in 1947 and I think from Sweden in 1946 too.
Re: West Ham, the opponent is Sparta Prague, not Sparta Budapest (no such serious club in Hungary with this name as far as I know). |

I'm not considering games from the British Isles, do you have details of the Swedish Newcastle issue from 1946?! |

Hi Jim,
I don't have details to hand of the Sweden trip - might be worth googling? There were also programmes issued on NUFC's 1949 tour of Canada - I have a couple of those but they're in storage right now. Issues for the games v Montreal All Stars and Alberta come to mind.
Cheers. |

To be honest I wasn't going to list any items from after 1960, but I've had so many responses and found so many interesting items that it would be churlish not to include them. This of course opens the door for many European competition games, some from very recent times. I will eventually include more Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish programmes but for now here is the updated list.
Again, it is not a definitive list, if you feel there are any inaccuracies or missing items please let me know

25 May 1929 Buenos Aires XI, Chelsea Won 3-2 Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Chelsea embarked upon a three-month tour of South America in 1929. During the trip the Blues earned the nickname 'Los Numerados' (the numbered ones), due to the Chelsea team wearing numbers on their shirts; ten years before numbered shirts were introduced by the Football League, and one year after becoming the first club (along with Arsenal) to wear shirt numbers.
I am not saying this was earliest, but it pre-dates the one you have.
Please see my wants list on this site.

Wow! That's a great item, not even in the Scott Cheshire collection?
My records show it was Combinado Bueneos Aires who were the opposition? I suppose this translates to the same as your item! |
