21 May, 2017, FA Vase final South Shields v Cleethorpes.
A good day out at Wembley for the FA Vase final, 4-0 to South Shields with Argentine Julio Arca pulling the strings in midfield.
A scorching hot day and a large turn out from the north east, many of whom made a weekend of it.
Kick off was 1215am and the pubs around the stadium were open from very early in the morning.

And so the 1962/63 season slithered to an overdue end....
Wednesday 22nd May 1963
Division III
Barnsley v Crystal Palace
Result - 0-4 (Burridge, Allen, Dowsett, Forster) Gate - 3,807
A previous owner must have stuck the league table page back in after cutting it out - we'll never know. Anyway, the table shows 45 games played by 10 teams (a good effort seeing as some teams played just 48 hours earlier and the table is up to date). For Palace this was their 4th game in 8 days and 14th in the 7 weeks since 1st April. Most clubs have a similar story to tell and in those days, they didn't have 25-man squads. In those last 4 games, Palace used 13 players, and 3 of the scorers played in all 4. So after a dreary 0-1 loss at Southend 48 hours earlier, they somehow drummed up the energy to stuff the Tykes and end in 11th place, a very healthy position considering they were in the bottom 4 at New Year. A hopeful sign of things to come for 63/4..........
There is one unfamiliar name among the scorers, winger Stan Forster. Signed from Margate in 1961, this was just his second game and after this there was only a fleeting appearance from the bench in the 63/4 league cup game at Bristol Rovers - and that was it for Stan. Back he went to deepest Kent - Dover Athletic, I believe.
Barnsley finished safely in 18th place and commiserations to Carlisle and dear old Brighton who were among the relegated clubs.
Here's Stan Forster

Memphis Rogues v Crystal Palace
22 May 1979 Liberty Bowl Memorial
First trip abroad to see my newly promoted team to the 1st Division play two friendlies in the USA. Hastily arranged trip saw me flying out on Freddie Laker's Skytrain to New York, £50 one way (the older members might remember him).
In front of around 3,500 spectators Palace ran out 3-1 winners with George Graham breaking his leg during the course of the game. No programme available before the game, went to the offices after the game to enquire if there were any only to be told that they arrived late from the printers and were lying on the floor in a box. The staff said I could help myself to them as they were of no use to them so I promptly helped myself to a large quantity of them with the help of a carrier bag supplied by the staff.

There is only one instance of Rovers playing a game on the 23rd of May in our history.
A Glos Cup game with City at Eastville in 1963.
Just over 8000 turned up to watch Rovers win 2-1.

I love this tread and will be very interested to see.
1. What team has played a competetive game on the latest date?
2. The latest date a Friendly as been played on?
The challenge has been set. LOL _________________ I am not gas, I am a Pirate.

I love this thread too. It will run out of steam for me in June as I have little or nothing for that month.
Latest league fixture I can see is New Brighton v Rotherham on 14 June 1947. |

European Cup Final in Lisbon.
A great day for one half of Glasgow and no doubt the opposite for the other half. The Lisbon Lions under Jock Stein became the first British winners of the European Cup
Celtic 2 Inter 1

1989 and after a 1-0 win had been secured at Twerton Park in the 3rd Division Play-Off 1st leg, Rovers travelled to Craven Cottage for the Semi-Final 2nd Leg. A very tense 1st half was goal less but Rovers turned on the style in the 2nd half and finished the game 4-0 winners to go through to the Final with Port Vale.
