23 April 1949
Carlisle v Accrington Stanley 3pm kick off. A football double header that day as the Reserves were playing a rearranged match at 6 45 the same evening. I doubt whether a programme was also issued for the reserve match.
The press photo below is of the Carlisle 48/9 squad stamped on the back by the Provincial Press Agency

Post subject: That 4 Second Goal |
|
|
On 25th April 1964 Bradford Park Avenue hosted Tranmere Rovers in a run of the mill League game.
The game is now part of football history because Jim Fryatt (Bradford) opened the scoring in just 4 seconds, The debate on the accuracy of the timing has raged for years.
The Football League Review mag did a feature on the Goal in the late 1960s,
Can anyone can remember the FLR edition please? |

61 years ago 25 April 1959; 8 years after failing to be re-elected to the League, New Brighton entertained Morecambe in a Lancashire Combination fixture. I doubt whether anyone at the time would have imagined that 50 seasons later Morecambe would be in the football league.
New Brighton won the Lancashire Combination in this season. A fairly run of the mill programme. Most New Brighton programmes from this period seem quite common.

Our Last Cup Final win

What a great programme. A proper piece of history. Not quite as prestigious, but the last thing Carlisle won before the war - wait for it .... the Cumberland Cup 1939 beating Border Star 3 -1
Sorry it’s a couple of days out of the sequence.

26 April 1975 Derby crowned first division champions and Carlisle’s last game in the top division. A crowd of 38000 at the Baseball Ground saw a 0 0 draw. Carlisle beat Derby 3 nil earlier in the season at Brunton Park.
Carlisle shocked everyone by being top of the League after 3 matches, beating Chelsea and Middlesbrough away and Tottenham at home. They weren’t able to keep up the momentum and slid to bottom of the table.
Derby issued their usual Ram newspaper. This used to be a £100+ programme but can be picked up for under £50 nowadays. The ticket is probably worth nearly as much.

April 26th 1963
Sheffield United v Orient Division 1
Cec Coldwell and Graham Shaw were asked not to play, so to allow debuts for 17 year olds Len Badger and Bernard Shaw. They agreed.

26 April 1923.
Workington v Barrow.
A sort of local Derby. Even now it’s close to an hour and a half drive from Barrow to Workington. I think Barrow would have been part of Lancashire when this match was played. Workington, of course was in Cumberland.
There is a little pencilled “Fr” on the cover so assume it was a friendly.

I was speaking to an old Palace player, Brian Wood, about 15 years ago - he joined Workington and played for them from 1970 to 76. A very good defender and a lovely bloke, sadly passed away now. Anyway, I asked what was the best atmosphere he ever experienced, thinking he'd say when Palace got promoted in 1964 when he was part of that side. But no. The games he remembed most were the local derbies between Workington & Barrow. He truly loved playing in those matches.
RIP Brian |

27 April 1949
Queen of the South v Carlisle United
Benefit match for Pat Fitzsimmons a Queens stalwart who had, amongst other achievements, taken part in the Normandy landings.
Carlisle’s manager was Mr William Shankly in his first managerial post. Wonder what happened to him!
