Sunderland postponed matches

Hi All,

I wonder whether anyone can help as to whether programmes were issued for the following matches which were postponed on the dates given. I'm beginning to suspect that I might be chasing a few wild geese!


Scunthorpe v Sunderland 16 February 1963
Sunderland v Southampton 9 February 1963
Swansea v Sunderland 12 January 1963
Luton v Sunderland 2 February 1963
Sunderland v Chelsea 19 January 1963

Sunderland v Newcastle 28 December 1965
Arsenal v Sunderland 9 February 1966

Everton v Sunderland 10 December 1966

Sunderland v Orient 2 January 1971

Ipswich v Sunderland 9 October 1976
Sunderland v West Brom 4 December 1976
Everton v Sunderland 12 March 1977

Sunderland v Manchester Utd 17 January 1981

Sunderland v Tranmere 11 November 1995
Sunderland v Birmingham 30 December 1995

For the following matches, I have programmes dated for the day of the postponed game, but not programmes dated for the day the match was actually played. Were replacement programmes issued?

Sunderland v Sheffield Wed, played 26 January 1966
Sunderland v Orient, played 11 January 1971
Sunderland v Watford, played 17 April 1972
Stoke v Sunderland, played 27 March 1979

The Everton v Sunderland from March 77 is a wild goose.
Everton were playing in the league cup final that day.
That’s 1 less to look for

Stoke v Sunderland, played 27 March 1979

As you say, Original prog dated 17/3 with no updates or insert was sold on the 27th .. a cold wet night where the ball stuck in the mud or surface water as I recall.

Does anyone know if a new programme was issued for the re-arranged match between Blackburn and Sunderland on 17 January 1979 (postponed from 1 January 1979) or did they use the original programme?

If they did use the original programme, was there an insert?

I was told some time ago that there was no replacement programme produced, and I haven’t ever seen a supplement. Does anyone know otherwise, please?

I also think the same applies to the Burnley v Sunderland FA Cup match in the same 78-79 season (i.e. I think the same programme was used, with no supplement). The programme is dated 27 January, the match was played on 21 February. Again, does anyone know differently please?

I haven’t ever seen a separate Orient programme dated 11 January- the day the match was played. I suspect there isn’t one?

I can’t make out any of the writing on the photo of the Man Utd programme. My query there is whether there is a programme dated 17 January (the day it was postponed)

And you can search "Sunderland away" and the relevant season.

This does actually prove that they exist, which is the basis of your original question. I believe.

Yes, got that thanks - eventually played 1 May. There was a Villa away postponement that season as well
