Hi All

Hope some of you may be able to help me out.

I inherited this ball from my grandparents and have not been able to find out much about it, does anybody recognise the signature on the ball and know when it was from?

Thanks in advance Smile

Thanks for the reply Jamesy, just looked up a few Bobby Moore signatures online and it does look like it.

Have been searching for something similar as a reference as I’m looking to sell it but having no such luck, does anyone know what sort of price I could expect to get for it?

Thanks again

Here is my Bobby Moore signature - yours looks all right

This was signed at a Ladies night in honour of Bobby Moore at the London Hilton - the other signature was Kenny Lynch who was one of the guests

Lovely item. Looks like an original late 1960s leather ball , which would be collectible as it is. Doesn’t look like a repro. If signed by the great man, would have thought £100 plus, perhaps even £200. The only trouble is establishing if that autograph has been printed on by the ball manufacturer? If it is a print , the ball would be worth a lot less. (apologies if you know all this stuff already) The signature on it doesn’t look like it has faded at all, yet some of the writing on the ball has faded. If Bobby Moore had signed the ball in ink , l think it would have faded over the years. Felt tip tends to fade as well. Is that a piece of plastic over the signature to protect it? I think the ball manufacturers are still in business. If you contact them they might be able to inform you if Bobby signed some of their late 1960s footballs. Also, you could have it checked out by a sports auction house to see if they can establish if the signature is authentic. Hope you get a great price if you decide to sell it. Good luck. PS. Just remembered, didn’t Bobby Moore run his own sports shop in London ?Perhaps your grandparents purchased the ball there?

Great observations! Just a thought, it may well be printed as the coating looks similar on the Spall Ball advert on the reverse side.....also the print colour is similar.
I agree that the fact that it hasn’t faded suggests it is printed on.
Only an opinion and still a great item!

Holtie , when l was a kid , l remember going to a local charity match . I think it was 1965 .? The game was being kicked - off by my dad’s workmate, Dixie Dean. He threw me a lovely brand new leather ball before the match started . It was signed by Dixie , some others that l can’t remember and a player who was down in the team sheet as ‘ the mystery man’ . The mystery man had just been released from prison. It was that great Everton midfielder Tony Kay. You will know the story why he was inside , but apparently at the time he was banned from all forms of football, so his appearances had to be kept secret. Instead of putting the ball away, the first thing l did when l got home was to go and play bloody football with it Get My Coat

Classic!
Not the same but similar mistake
I won a fully signed Liverpool football as a kid in 1977 and proudly hung it in my bedroom in a net thinking I was looking after it! Needless to say by the time I was 18 the signatures had faded away!!!

Hi All

Thanks for all the replies, very much appreciated.

Agreed the ball does look like an original, leather has gone hard over time, unfortunately i can't ask my grandparents any questions as they are no longer with me but the story i was told is that it was given as a gift to my grandfather who was a doctor in Liverpool during the 60's-80's by a colleague from London as a gift.

The plastic over the signature is sellotape that was put on by my grandfather to preserve the signature i was told, some of the tape has come away and you can see underneath where the pen/print has worn right down to the point of not being able to see it.

You've all been able to give me a lot more insight into this ball, i will be looking to email the ball manufacturer to se eif they cans hed any light on it and also look to find a sports memorabilia specialist/auction house to see if they can verify.

Thanks again everyone Smile
