What is your opinion on the statue of George Best that was revealed today I think it is dreadfull and for goodness sake why no plinth.

I understand the artist's view that they didn't want him put on a pedestal. They chose to put him on the same level as ordinary folk, to be symbolic, to represent the fact that he was just a normal guy.

What I don't understand is why you'd make it a monstrosity.

Most football statues are pretty awful, either in their design or scale and particularly where they are positioned. Alf Ramsey's statue at Portman Road for example is pretty mediocre and set against the backdrop of a council car park. Having said that, it isn't even the worst statue at Portman Road (Bobby Robson's is a real shocker)

The exception to the rule is Bobby Moore at the top of Wembley Way - it's the best thing about the new Wembley
