First off why can't they do as Sportingold do & offer a proper all round service? Especially on postage. Royal Mail versus Couriers? I want mine posted by RM as from experience couriers are second best especially over cost. I don't see it changing though only getting worse.

Are they all other auction houses apart from Sportingold ?

Agree with your point but would point out that Lockdales offer a service as good if not better than Sportingold.

Post subject: Royal Mail Shocker if it is 100% accurate.

Today I was told a fact that rocked me to my core which came from an experienced Auction House but not one that specialises in Football items.

I had won a lot and they do not send stuff out and use a 3rd party, but as my winning item was a small single piece of paper I asked if on this occasion they would help me out.

They said they would so how do you want it to go and I said Royal Mail next day fully signed and insured service, to which they responded "OK" but you do realise that any Antiques or collectibles are NOT covered in their T & C's to which I said that I have used this for as many years as I can recall and the chap said said and when u go to the PO do they ask you what is inside and I said yes and I tell them football memorabilia and he then said they still take your money KNOWING should the unthinkable happen-you are not covered.

Well, I was so shocked by this revelation and I was driving as he told me and I have only just got back home so I have not tried to check it out, I know that sending cash is a no no and they tell you that at the PO, so if this is accurate then what can you send?, legal papers-anything with no value yet they have staggered rates for up to £500 and 2500, so I thought I would throw this out to everyone for their comments.

The chap said "look at the fine print" but if you want it sending and I am sure they will deliver next day I will send it that way but you must send me an email or text to confirm this is how you want it as the alternative courier was £55 and the auction house said he understood they charge £25 to send it but to insure it that is where the extra £30 comes into play as it is based on a % of what you have paid.

I will not mention which Auction House but as I say I am confident it will arrive on time, I never use Recorded unless I have too as it only has a £42 maximum cover.

We all as collectors use this RM service every day and I suspect the majority have had no issues over the years but is anyone else aware of this?.

The Auction House said of course they have learned by some of their clients having issues thinking they were covered and when lost RM have said read our T & C's hence he has some experience with it all.

So open for some debate Wave

My initial thoughts were "Botox" of course, but perhaps not so?...

First I have ever heard of it Leslie, and I too am always asked what I am sending and I say 'football trading cards' and they never say 'not covered' so very strange why they would have such small print getout clause yet take our money??

Lockdales do offer also and a nice company to deal with as our Sportingold who in my opinion have the best admin staff-nothing is too much trouble even if I want 20-30 items scanned, never had an issue with Mullocks and on occasions Robert has delivered to me personally from Sporting Memorys as well.

Have to cry 'BS' here, nothing in the T&C's nor have I ever had a claim rejected when stating what has been lost (including recorded as well as proof of postage)

I guess they just dont like dealing with posting things out.

Royal mail themselves offer collectibles, how do they deliver those ? Yeap you guessed it, recorded delivery.

Sending valuables, money & jewellery in the UK

If you’re sending valuables, money or jewellery in the post, you should use Royal Mail Special Delivery Guaranteed®. This lets you to claim compensation if the post is lost or damaged. Valuables sent using any other service aren't eligible for compensation.

Money should be packaged securely and shouldn't be visible from the outside. Don't indicate anywhere on the packaging that money is enclosed.

I can't see any mention of anything specific, and let's face it, if I purchased foreign currency online it is delivered by Royal Mail Special Delivery. I very much doubt a programme wouldn't be covered but €700 in €20 notes would be.

I call BOTOX.

Hi Leslie

I must say I think the auction fellow is talking nonsense, I have had a few items that have gone missing over the years and have always claimed without a problem. That includes sporting memorabilia (football Programmes) antique vases etc etc.

I think the only thing you will get caught out on is if you send something that you shouldn't or in the case of glass and china/porcelain items you are only covered for loss, if it gets damaged thats not covered.

Bit of a baffling comment to make by someone who should know better, and just to add most couriers pretty much have an identical policy.

Leslie & others have made very good valid points on it all. I simply began this thread in frustration over service and tardy yet expensive delivery. With some AH there is no balance between waving a gavel and getting your hands dirty with packing it all up. Do they consider it’s beneath them so hire outside agencies to do that ‘dirty work’ costing a fortune?

Indeed.

Sheffield Auction Gallery had an item I really wanted about a year or so ago. I won the item fully knowing the additional cost of having it sent to me, and so factored that into what I bid. But what a rip off their p&p was!

I seriously think that they thought they were doing me a favour by 'arranging' delivery through another company.

It's all well and good using the internet to bring their auctions to the whole country, or indeed the whole world. But with internet bidding should come a proper delivery service at fair prices.

You wouldn't have people buying a simple programme on ebay, then being told that if they don't collect it, that it is a minimum of £10 postage (and mine was double that a year ago), and it will take 3 weeks

I have to agree.

Well I was given the option of either a tenner or 55 quid, I chose RM and it arrived this morning as I knew it would, however in life you get to realise there is no point in trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, BUT in fairness to this Auctioneer he listened to me and did as I asked and considering they use 3rd party people, I have to say thanks which I have done but I think he is so wrong regarding Royal Mail.

Whenever I have been asked what i am sending I always quote "printed papers" and have never been further questioned

Like Rafehod has mentioned,I have never had a problem claiming when the odd item or 2 has gone missing
