Pete would know more about this than me, but is it possible that a newspaper editor may have wanted an action shot of Dougan. None was available, so they placed Derek’ s head on an action shot of an Arsenal player? In a newspaper black and white reproduction, Arsenal and Peterborough colours during this era looked exactly the same. Did newspapers do this?

Not seen head transplants myself, they moved balls (the round ones used for kicking!) frequently to fit one into the image, sometimes without getting rid of the original ball so there might be two in one image, and they blanked out the occasional leg, arm etc if one was getting in the way.

The plot thickens, the Leicester LC was an evening ko dose not look like an night time game to me played in red that game.
Re the pick being super imposed I don't think so.

How about Football Combination games?

Arsenal, West Ham & Peterborough played each other in the Football Combination in both 1963/4 and 1964/5, Doog's only seasons at London Road.

It's quite possible he'd have had the occasional game in the stiffs if the first team weren't playing or he was coming back from injury - or, perish the thought, had been dropped.

Healthy crowd though...………….

As Pete mentions Doog only played two seasons for Peterborough, 63/4 & 64/5. Looking at the team pics below, especially the shirts, the photo in question could be 64/5?

63/4

64/5

They played these teams in 64/5 http://www.uptheposh.com/seasons/77/ and looking at the Football Combination results they played in some well known stadia, some of which has already been suggested.

Can anybody work it out from here? Sherlock

The Arsenal single sheet programme for the reserves games v Peterborough do not list Dougan as playing. However, my copy of 63-4 has no team changes listed on it, so he may have played, whereas my copy of 64-5 has, and he is not listed. In the first team programmes, the away reserve team is not listed in the report so no help there either.

I contacted a Posh collector and he confirms that Dougan played in the League Cup game at Leicester in 64/5 and they wore red due to the colour clash. Whether that was with white sleeves or not I don't know.

Nice to see the 1964/5 Posh socks match the socks in the original photo too. Good work, Rocky.

Thumbs Up

Stamford Bridge, Chelsea v Peterborough FA Cup Round Six, March 1965.

Peterborough wore red shirts with white sleeves, and socks with the two hoops.

What date was it? perhaps the lights weren't needed until second half, particularly if a sunny evening?

The shirt looks red as opposed to blue.

Leicester v Posh 23rd Sept 1964
Chelsea v Posh 6th March 1965

Think it's Chelsea as overlap suggested.

So to recap, the ground appears to have a small white perimeter wall, a white stanchion with white facia between the lower and upper areas. What is that to the left of Doogs head, a flagpole or floodlighting or possibly white facia on the overhang of the stand? All potential clues I guess. Back to Googling…

Surely the white sloping up behind his head is the glass in the end on the stand behind him as hes turning to attack that end of the ground ??? Which would suggest a long stand down the side of the ground? what was chelsea's ground like then ??

This has turned into a real mystery.
I've watched it over the last few days and kept quiet as I assumed I was wrong as my first thought was (and still is), Highbury.
I know the dates, fixtures etc don't fit though. Could it have been a reserve match? Always well attended back then Sherlock
