Yes i did wonder if Possee had been transferred by then. However that guy in the picture could be one of several from the team line up eg Cripps.

I found this pic of millwall team around that time and bloke in our picture far right could be Alan Dorney perhaps

Thanks Gooner but sadly it can't be Possee as he joined Palace in Jan 73, making his debut on 20th Jan - the Sunderland v Millwall game was on 27th.

Oh well....

The clock is a good spot, that should rule out Millwall if the clock is right!

The opposition player on the far left could that be Oxford's Hugh Curran and the bearded player Nigel Cassidy ?

As Big Roy states, it could be Oxford with Nigel Cassidy a possibility.

Although the team photo above is probably 6 months after the event, it could show some of those players on Big Roys photo. Nick Lowe's mop of hair could indicate that he is the player trying to head the ball. A better image of the photo can be found on eBay, item number:272862385089.

All possible except according to Historical Kits Oxford had a badge and a black stripe on their yellow shorts. Not infallible though.

Good work team!

No nearer to solving this. The above link shows the 1972/73 Oxford team photo, there is no badge on the shirt.Maybe they are wearing all yellow.
The Sunderland v Oxford crowd was 39,000 which would fit in with the packed stand.

Enlarging the photo, I think the away team actually have two bearded players.

Here's another picture from the same game...

The picture is taken from the 73/4 pre-season friendly Sunderland v Tottenham programme, annoyingly there is no caption.

A Millwall contact of mine did not recognise it as Millwall. I thought Boam/Boro on the original picture but nothing else fits. With no better answer I can only think it is Oxford but it would be good to find out one way or another.

Roy, I can post my picture on my Twitter page as a follower may know the answer, would you be happy for me to post your picture too or would you rather me not as it's not watermarked?

Regards, Mal

Although he only posts on the forum occasionally, I've mailed an Oxford collector to see if he can help put this to bed.

I'm by no means an expert on this as the game was played 14 years before I started watching Oxford.

It looks to me as if the players could be Hugh Curran, John Fleming, Unkown, Unknown, John Evanson and Dick Lucas. All of the players played for Oxford against Sunderland on the 3rd March 1973.

Kevin Thomas, John Shuker, Dave Roberts, Colin Clarke, Keith Gough, Nigel Cassidy, Steve Aylott and Derek Clarke were the other players involved on the day

Oxford it is then but I'm surprised that that's Hugh Curran.
