Hi,

I bought a few programmes at auction a while ago, with them were some late 1940s Sports Reporter magazines inside one of them was this Wilkes & Son, West Bromwich B&W photo of a young 'Billy Wright'

Can anyone help with the dating please ?

looks like early/mid 1940s to me

Best Regards
Paul

Assuming that the note on the photo was done at the time, your starting point is 1946 as that was the year he became an international player.

The collared shirt with that length shorts was worn until 1954 according to historical football kits site.

He looks very young for a 22-year old at the end of the war which he was then - he was born in Feb 1924. He started playing for Wolves on leaving school, and played 16 games in the 1939/40 season and more later in the war.

I would suggest it was taken near the start of his career as he looks more like a 17-year-old than 22.

But whether it would have been printed then is doubtful due to the lack of paper in wartime.

Very nice photo though. Good old Wilkes!
