I was contemplating various aspects of life, the universe et al. when it occurred to me in this day and age of long contracts being honoured for weeks sometimes, and various badges being kissed and chests being beaten in pride of "your" club, and undying loyalty lasting nearly a week, who and when was the last person to have a testimonial, apart from injury related? I know at Leeds it was 2004/05 13 years ago! I'm sure there must be more recent, but I bet you have to go down the leagues for a recent one!

Michael Carrick had one at the end of last season.

Pretty rare occurrence nowadays though, I agree.

I’m a Evertonian, but went to Jamie Carraghers Testimonial in 2010. I know he let himself down big style the other week, but he is known as a good lad! All the money from his game went to charity. An interesting one was Dixie Deans in 1964. He worked with my dad in Littlewoods during that period and told him that he would give us a wave as he led the teams out . He kept his word , mind you there was about 50,000 others in the stadium. He kicked the game off, so l can say that l saw the great Dixie Dean kick a ball!

Thedoog, when you think of the line-ups, England v Scotland drawn from only Everton and Liverpool players, you realise just how many top Scots played at the top level in England during that era. Bill Shankly and Harry Catterick were the two team managers. Didn’t Everton’s Alex Young say that he had never played for a manager like Shankly during all his time in football. ? Apparently Shankly gave them a rousing team talk , telling them how important it was to beat the old enemy! It was only a friendly after all. I don’t think Alex could quite believe it after years playing for the much more reserved Catterick. Although totally different characters, both of them in their own way were great managers .

Palace goalkeeper Julian Speroni had one a couple of years ago.

He's been at Palace since 2004 and still played a number of games this season

He gave all his testimonial money away to a number of charities and good causes

Would hope we might have one at Leicester for Andy King the only player to win Lge 1, the Championship and Premier Lge with the same club.

When Newport County played Everton in 1974 for Brian Harris' testimonial match, Dixie was there and kicked that game off too Pie. I didn't see it though, I was only six. I was probably in my Nan's garden burning ants with a magnifying glass or something.

Thumbs Up

Great photos Wiggy. Even though he was getting on a bit , you can see the style of Dixie kicking that ball. He was very good to me when l was a kid , , getting me loads of signed stuff. He once gave my dad a load of signed photos of him holding the FA Cup, 1933. I gave most of them away to my mates., Would be worth a few bob today. Apparently there’s a film coming out on him quite soon. Let’s hope they do him justice.

Terrific story mate, those photos would certainly be worth a handsome few shillings these days.

Sounds like Dixie was as classy off the pitch as he was on it.

Two from Hibs!

Lewis Stevenson had his testimonial at the start of this season. He is the only player in history to have won both the League Cup and Scottish Cup whilst at Hibs.

Paul Hanlon, also a Scottish Cup winning legend, is due to have a testimonial next season.

Tony Craig Test - Millwall v Brentford - 30/07/2016.

324 appearances and 9 goals (a defender).

Moved on a 'Free' to Bristol Rovers Feb 2018 and scored in his first game!

(thank you Wikipedia)
