I'm putting a placeholder here where I intend to try and list Irish (Republic of Ireland) cup finals programmes info. For my own information as much as anything else! I may need some help from one or two of our resident Irish anoraks Very Happy

Anyway, let's start at the top

FAI Cup finals
The FAI Cup final has been played every year since 1922. I believe there were individual programmes for all finals (and replays) back to the 30s but I'll need to check my notes

2020 (Dundalk v Shamrock Rovers) played behind closed doors was available directly from the printer only and is out of stock. Not too many have surfaced on eBay that I'm aware of, so may be hard to find in the future.

edit: from the start....
1920s
1922, 1922 Replay, 1923, 1925, 1927 Replay, 1928, 1929 no known issues
Programmes exist for
1924 Athlone v Fordsons, 1926 Fordsons v Shamrock Rovers, 1927 Drumcondra v Brideville, 1930 Shamrock Rovers v Brideville

Thanks, that's an interesting lot.... surprised to see the City-Gornik Cup Winners Cup final in there, I would have thought it would go very well on its own.

After our enjoyable St Patricks Athletic thread I'm going to refloat this one on domestic Irish finals. This will basically be me asking Gary a series of questions but feel free to join in! Very Happy

Anyway, Republic of Ireland domestic cup finals, starting with the
FAI Cup, 1921-22 to date
I believe programmes were produced for all finals, including replays back to the mid-1930s at least. Anyone able to confirm if there were programmes for the replays in 1959, 1953, 1952, 1951 (two replays), 1941?
1920s
I believe there were programmes 1924, 1926 and 1927. Any others?
1930s
There were programmes for 1930, 1937-38-39. I suspect there were for most of the rest of the 30s, anyone able to confirm?

And a quickie, the newest domestic cup, the President's Cup (played between the league champions and FAI Cup winners)

President's Cup , 2014 to date
Programmes produced 2014-2019, also for the 2020 Dundalk v Shamrock Rovers game which was postponed for weather and not played due to Covid.
2021 Shamrock Rovers v Dundalk, closed doors, no programme
2022 Shamrock Rovers v St Pats, no programme
2023 Derry City v Shamrock Rovers, programme produced

Programmes exist for 24,26,27,30,34,35,36.....to date

Note 34,35,36 and 37 all look like pirates. 35 I'm going from memory as a collector has a 30's one and I'm pretty sure it is Bohs v Dundalk 35.

trusting my memory here so remind me if I miss any replays

none known before 41
41 - new programme
47 - nothing known
50 - same programme with a sticker with new details
50 - 2nd replay new programme
51 - new programme
52 - new programme
53 - nothing known
59 - new programme
64 - same programme original details blacked out
65 - same programme sold unaltered according to a Limerick collector who was there that I trust.
69 - same programme original details blacked out
70 - - same programme original details blacked out
70 2nd replay - new programme
71 - same programme original details blacked out stamped replay
73 - new programme but only new cover and slight changes to editorial
all common after that

Thanks Gary

Just on replays, I believe AK in Sligo has a 1939 replay programme.

Next competition is the end of season Top Four Cup, semi-finals and final competition between the top four in the league. Pretty popular competition at the start, I believe, before petering out.

Top Four Cup, 1955-56 to 1973-74
55-6 final programme comes up regularly, I've seen programmes for 56-7, 57-8 and 58-9 finals. Strangely I've not seen anything for any subsequent finals including ones involving Dundalk in 64 and 67 (though I've not tracked it religiously).
So, any other known issues for Top Four Cup finals after the first 4?

I don't think there are any after that.

Limerick issued for the semi final v Cork Celtic in 1960 but that actually does appear reasonably regularly.

Thanks, it's weird that none of the other finals appear to have had programmes. I know there was a drop off in production thru the 60s into the 70s, compared to the 50s, but still. I'm only aware of only one Dundalk Top Four programme, a home semi v Sligo 66-7.

Moving on, League of Ireland Shield. For a long time the third biggest competition. Generally played as a league, but there were a couple of finals/playoffs.

League of Ireland Shield, 1921-22 to 1973-74
Played as league, generally, until 69-70. I'm assuming there's nothing from the 22-3 final, or playoffs 23-4, 28-9, 33-4, 36-7. 38-9, 39-40, 50-1, 52-3.
64-5 Playoff Shamrock Rovers v Cork Celtic playoff?
69-70 Cork Hibs v Waterford final?
70-1 Shels v Athlone and two replays, reliably informed there was nothing
71-2 Dundalk v Drogheda final, I have a note saying 'probably no issue, a pirate exists)
72-3 Cork Hibs v Shamrock Rovers final?

I'm not aware of any issues for shield finals. Even the pirate for Dundalk v Drogheda is news to me.

Note there were some for the first division shield in the 80's and 90's.

Of course when it was run on a league basis there were deciding matches. Limerick's first national trophy was won in Oriel Park in 1953 thanks to a last day win. My father then aged 14 left Limerick for the first time to travel to the game. He went alone as well which was quite a journey in those days.

The programme is a regular Dundalk issue.

Note Limerick did not issue for the 1984 Shield Final v UCD.

The Dundalk-Drogheda shield pirate information came from Martin S.

What match was the 83-4 'Shield' game between Limerick and UCD? afaik the Shield ended in 72-3 and the Frist Division Shield started with the First Division in 85-6? Speaking of which....

First Division Shield 85-6 to 97-8
Generally played in two groups (north and south) with the goup winners meeting in the final:
85-6 Derry-Longford, programmes for both legs
86-7 EMFA v Finn Harps at Oriel Park, I think there was a programme, not sure
87-8 to 89-90 no competition
90-1 Home Farm-Drogheda ???
91-2 UCD-Waterford ???
92-3 Galway-Home Farm at Tolka ???
93-4 Sligo-Waterford ???
94-5 UCD-Drogheda ???
95-6 Waterford-Bray programmes for both legs
96-7 Galway v Limerick ???
97-8 Home Farm-Cobh, programmes for both legs

I must point FinnHarpsHistory at this thread for his input Smile

The Shield was brought back for a season in 83/84. It was straight knockout. Limerick hosted UCD in the final a week before the FAI Cup Final and won on pens after a 1-1 draw. Definitely nothing done. Galway did issue for the semi final.

For the first division shield

Galway definitely issued v Limerick.

Just a teamsheet for Galway v Home Farm.

Nothing for EMFA v Finn Harps I was pretty certain again a copy if it exists would be great.

I can't recall on the others.

Ah yes, I see we played Drogheda away and Athlone home in the Shield over Christmas '83. I've no note of programmes for either of those games. I had a feeling there was a programme for EMFA-Harps at Oriel, but I've no record of a programme in my extensive Dundalk notes, so probably none.

Onwards!

Dublin City Cup 34-5 to 72-3, plus 2 revivals!
34-5 and 43-4 to 50-1 league format
35-6 to 42-3 any known programmes for these finals? (all played at Dalymount)
Finals 51-2 to 72-3:
No known issue 52-3 Rovers v Drums
Programmes exist 55-6, 56-7, 57-8, 67-8 (first match)
Any others??
75-6 revival for clubs who didn't make League Cup quarter-final, I think, Athlone v Pats final, no known issue
83-4 revival, a preseason experimental competition for the 6 Dublin clubs plus Dundalk and Drogheda, I think it may even have been played over 60 minute matches. We played Bohs in Tolka, Home Farm in Drogheda and Rovers in the final at Dalymount (0-0, Rovers won on pens), no programmes known for any of these.

38/39 was at Shelbourne Park. See photo.

I don't have others to hand but

pretty sure 40/41 Dundalk v Drums is a standard Bohemians issue

42/43 was sold recently to a Dundalk collector at auction. a basic 4-page issue i think.

58/59 Drumcondra v Limerick exists. I wouldn't consider it to be that rare.

Limerick issued for the 69/70 final which is difficult to get. I'd be fairly confident Waterford did not issue for the replay.

Struggling to think of others off the top of my head.

thanks, as ever, for the info....
38-9, lovely, don't think I've seen a Cork City Mk1 programme before!
40-1 great, if its a standard Bohs programme it might turn up (in my price range!)
Hadn't even realised 69-70 went to a replay

77/78 Shamrock Rvs v Finn Harps Tyler Cup yes.
73/74 2 different programmes at Bohs - postponed then same issue with 2 dates on it.
I've had Portadown on my Wants List for many years and they did issue for the semi final. I was under the impression that one existed but not so sure now.

Blaxnit 67/68 yes to a Crusaders issue
69/70-73/74 only one issue for each final available at both legs if two-legged

Nothing known for any early 60's game in the North v South cup.

1947-48 Belfast Celtic v Distillery not known
1946-47 Drumcondra v Shamrock Rovers (2 legs) Yes Dublin not known Belfast
