On the 21st + 23rd April 1957 they played two matches against Copenhagen X1 in Denmark.. So it must be the reason.

Allow me to be able to shed some light on some of the questions posed.

Firstly, Manchester United did not travel to Denmark via any boat when they went there on their 2 match Close Season Tour, here is one of the players who went on that Tour's official Manchester United Itinerary Card.

Next we can unravel the matter of how and why Manchester United were on board.

The Empress made it's maiden voyage on the 18th April 1957 departing from Liverpool to Montreal & Quebec in Canada, on the same day Manchester United were thrashing Sunderland at Old Trafford 4-0 to wrap up their 2nd successive First Division Title.

It is my opinion that as the Empress was in dock the week prior in Liverpool the Manchester United team and party were invited "on board" one of the days for the pre-sailing festivities which could have meant Luncheon or Dinner and as United were the Champions and in the week Champions elect again, it was not unlike Matt Busby to let them off "his" hook for an afternoon or an evening before a big game, today it is called player bonding-back then it was called player bonding!.

Also the Tour to Denmark after the season was over meant the United team had to be back home on the 27th April, as they had a Cup Final to play on the 4th May!.

Stewart, you only had to ask..... Laughing
