I recently sent an early 70s prog to a buyer..it was....
a letter size and weighed less than 100g,
it fitted through a Royal mail letter measure board,
it had a first class stamp on it (unfranked of course),
it had the correct address written on it
But
it was returned to me
with a sticker stating insufficient postage
and they wanted £1 handling charge
I am very very confused with this one and will be going to the sorting office tomorrow so that they can 'sort' it out

I got a card from the post office. Insufficient postage, collect and pay £1 or put stamps to the value of £1.71 to get the item delivered. I went for the stamp option because the sorting office is a bitch to get to unless you've got a car. Posted the card, next day got the same card delivered to me - re-posted it,the card comes through my door again the following day. I went to the sorting office £3.70 bus fare and a half hour walk. |

I am very very confused with this one and will be going to the sorting office tomorrow so that they can 'sort' it out |
The Next Day:
I first went to the post office and they measured the letter and weighed it (72g) and stated that it did indeed qualify for standard letter delivery and that the first class stamp was more than adequate . They could think of no valid reason why an 'insuficient postage' sticker was put on it. They told me to go to my local sorting office (where the actual letter was sorted)
The Sorting Office:
They admitted that it was one of theirs and that a card would have been put through the intended recepients letterbox stating that there was a letter waiting for him that had insufficient postage on it. He had failed to pick it up (after about three and a half weeks) and they had redirected it back to me.
They too could see no reason why it had an 'insufficient postage' sticker on it. They measured it and checked it on the official RM letter checker thingy..but they couldnt weigh it as they said that they ....... had no weighing scales . A sorting office with no means of weighing things.....Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiight!
One of the jobsworths asked me if I had paid the insufficient postage myself. when I said no, because it had been redirected back to me and that his colleague had just stated that there was no problem with it.......he said that I had 'got away with it' as I should have been charged it Even his colleague looked baffled.
They then advised me that I should contact the 'Revenue Protection Department' at Doncaster for more details on this issue.
Revenue Protection Department-Doncaster:
I rang this number and was met by a menu option...when I chose the option which I thought was relevant..........the line went dead
Summary:
It does seem that you can securely package an item , put the correct address on it , ensure it has the correct postage on it regarding the size and weight ...... but it may still not be enough for some of our friends at the Royal Mail.
If you follow it up, you end up with people agreeing with you but scratching their heads at the same time. You meet them face to face but they cant help you. You must either phone or write (I have written in the past and had no replies).
I think they make it so difficult and time consuming that the majority of people just give up trying and concede.....just like I have |

I think the social fabric of this great nation of ours is being slowly unpicked by continued recycling of envelopes.
There should be an immediate £5 surcharge on any letter showing signs of being through the postal system before, and the offender flogged. _________________ https://www.flickr.com/photos/footballprogrammes/albums |

Did the ' re-cycled ' envelope have a sticker barcode or barcode on it ?
These are used in mail centres .
If it did this will alert RM to a re-used item and potential un-authorised item re - entering the system - also used to trap posties taking undelivered mail back to the sorting office
The barcode sticker can be removed but may leave an impression on the envelope - best to cover this up with a sticker or scribble over it .
They're not keen on the public knowing this hence the possible reluctance to give a suitable explanation _________________ http://www.sportsattax.net/ Paypal accepted No Pies - Ticket stubs added daily |

Why can't you re-use an envelope?I don't see the problem if you're still paying postage. |

All the letter had on it was the original address (mine) which I covered up with a label and sticky backed plastic (ala Blue Peter).
I cant believe that the Royal Mail own the right to refuse the use of a previously used envelope! |

I can't believe RM are recruiting 1000 staff to cope with 'demand '
How many have they got rid of in the last few years ?
Maybe those so called fast sorting machines are breaking down too much .
Bet the terms are different .
By the way
Bin liners 'll be banned next ! _________________ http://www.sportsattax.net/ Paypal accepted No Pies - Ticket stubs added daily |

They may as well go the whole hog and state that they will only handle official Royal Mail envelopes and packaging......... wouldn't surprise me if that idea hasn't already been mooted in various high powered RM corridors. |

Their days are numbered anyway, they are far too dear. If I send anything over 1 kilo i'll use a courier.
This is one 2 people have used to send items to me recently.

That is fine until it is misdelivered, then were does it go???? In the post box.
Note also, rural delivery areas EXTRA CHARGE. So, if you live in a big city, them i'm all right Jack. You think competition is good ? Didn't they say that about the Gas and Electric companies? look what happened there. Be careful what you wish for. |
