These photos aren't mine but one of my regulars has asked for my help.

It's Newcastle away somewhere and that scoreboard is throwing me. It came with another photo of a game v Fulham at the Cottage - so the top one I'm not sure about, and the bottom one is Craven Cottage. So are they both at the Cottage?

All help greatly appreciated, as always. Cheers! Sherlock

I would say the top one isnt Fulham as it looks like the houses run parallel to the stand unless my eyes are failing

They are definitely different games as the white kits (shorts & socks) are different. And you're right in that the top one can't be the Cottage.

Cheers

Had a senior moment in not reading that it was definitely Newcastle and with the open side, suggested it may have been Lincoln or Brighton... Shake

Do we know if it's the same season as the Fulham game?

DQ we have now found that the Fulham game was in November 1933.

The other photo may be from that season too but as yet we don't know. I will forward your suggestion of Lincoln or Brighton to him for his consideration.

As I said on Twitter...it cannot be unless it was a friendly.

Different divisions, no League Cup and too early for FA Cup.

He's already ruled out Spurs, Preston, Swansea & Port Vale. Add to that list Fulham. So he's racking his brains. Could be an FA Cup game if the home team (usually in stripes?) changed colours, which was standard then. But without a date it's not so easy. He'll be back in touch if he gets nowhere now, so thank you for your input, DQ.

You'd think that scoreboard would be a dead giveaway. Obviously not.

Another one for the mix...could it be Wolves away in the FA Cup 1933-34?

Not totally convinced re white shirts and the open side at Molineux had a row of houses behind it too.

DQ attached is Molineux in the early 30's (v Reading). Neither kit nor ground look right for the Newcastle pic.

Is there any way of reading what looks like an advert on
the top of the scoreboard?

Yes, good call sir........ but no scoreboard yet, that could have been a fairly temporary addition I suppose. I've told my man it's Spurs v Newcastle. I'll let you know if he says otherwise.

Cheers all. (More to come)

Incidentally, your second & third images from "White Hart Lane" are mirror images.

The Tottenham game was probably 1933-34 but the Fulham game was probably between 34-35 and 38-39.

DQ and all, the Fulham game was November 1933.

My man reckons he has now worked out that the Spurs game must have been played on 7th September 1935, as he thinks he can recognise the 3 Newcastle players - keeper, Mickey Burns; full back, David Fairhurst; right half, Bill Imrie. This was in the second division and this was the only game they all played together at Spurs and Newcastle won 2-1.

However, he must be wrong...... the East Stand ("Shelf") opened in September 1934. So it must be earlier and he's probably got one or two players wrong.

And I can't find a reference to that scoreboard anywhere. The wording on it reads "PROGRAMME SCOREBOARD". I'd be interested if anyone has any Spurs programmes in that period, was a half-time scoreboard checker printed in them?

Incidentally, he's getting these photos from a batch of 1200 negatives he bought which he's had developed. One down, 1199 to go! I have one or two more to post, so watch this space.
