Hi ,

Mansfield Town played friendlies against Chelmsford and Kettering in March 1940. The local Mansfield paper has matches played:

Kettering Sat 23rd
Chelmsford Mon 25th

Birmingham Mail and Nottm Evening Post on British Newspaper Archive site have these dates reversed. Are there any club historians out there who can confirm correct dates.

Regards

Neil

Chelmsford Chronicle Friday 29 March 1940 page 3, which the index indicates is on BNA.

City had a splendid holiday winning all their three games . . On Friday Luton Town were defeated 5-4; on Saturday Mansfield Town 3-2 and on Monday Notts County (or should it have been Derby County?) had to admit a 5-2 defeat.

There's a four para match report and note of the gate 3.007.

Hi,

In "Wheel 'em in", the official history of Chelmsford, it also shows the game played on 23rd March with a 3-2 victory and attendance of 3007, and also Notts County on the 25th.

I assumed from the posting the OP was just looking for confirmation of which they round they were and the Chelmsford Chronicle info was sufficient for that.

There's also a match report on the Kettering game accessible on BNA in the Nottingham Journal 26 March 1940 at page 4 which starts Kettering beat Mansfield by three goals to one in a friendly at Kettering yesterday.

Hi All,

Thanks for the replies, think we can safely say that the local papers got them the wrong way around.

Cheers
