We all love football here, but we clearly also all share the collecting bug, so, just out of curiosity, apart from the football stuff what else do you lot like to collect?

For my part it's mostly music-related: Isle of Wight-related vinyl, I.W music ephemera, general ephemera from bands I've seen and vinyl from a couple of particular bands.

Also have a fledgling (but growing) collection of I.W. breweriana.

Finally, there's a long story attached, but I also collect the old Rowntrees Smartie tube lids - currently have around 4,500 of them...

Over to you Smile

My main interest is in my Sunderland programmes, plus any other games played at Sunderland.

Other than that, I have a small collection of Keighley rugby programmes and I tend to buy a programme from any match I'm ground hopping at too. I won't throw these away, but I'm not overly concerned about keeping them either. Occasionally I've been approached by somebody after a game if they haven't been able to pick up a copy, and I'm happy to forward it on.

The only other thing I have a small collection of is beer glasses. I wouldn't say I collect them as such, I just sort of acquire them from beer festivals and suchlike. There are probably around 100 sitting in my kitchen cupboard.

Hi yachtsmun, not really a collector of lsle of Wight memorabilia, but went to the 1970 Festival. Still got two original tickets( didn't arrive until Saturday so these are for the Friday) signed by the Who's Pete Townshend .Although Hendrix, the Doors and all the others were on , the Who left them all standing as a live band. If the tickets were signed by Hendrix or Jim Morrison, then they would certainly be worth quite a few quid! Jimi's last major concert l think.

My Pompey collection started when I was living in Sandown at the end of the 1970s ,I came back up north in the 80s but of course you carry on with the same club, because that's what you do isn't it . Anyway I've still got loads of Pub and Brewery memorabilia from the island, mainly badges, beer pump clips and towels from the the dominant Whitbread's pubs of the day but also from the now defunct Burts brewery, the beer was crap but the pubs were sound Chine Inn-Shanklin, Stag - Lake, Mill Bay and Walmer Castle - Ventnor all spring to mind . I miss the island pubs cos I think they have a special atmosphere and I was shocked and saddened to see so many gone when I last had a drive around the island, . Remember the Old Manor House at the bottom of Lake Hill ? Anglesea Tavern in Ryde, The Globe in Cowes, The Malt and Hope, the publican and the Rose and crown in Newport, . Clarendon, Plough and Barleycorn Keats Inn and Savoy Tavern in Shanklin . Yaverland, York Inn, Royal Standard and Prince of Wales in Sandown, now I hear that the Fountain in Sandown is under threat too, sad days or is it just me that's stuck in the past and reluctant to change , oh for the days when you could have a fag with your pint ! !

As if my Spurs collection of programmes and memorabilia doesn't take up enough room, I also collect hardback autobiographies!!

Currently numbering well over a thousand I would guess, I look for anybody interesting and it's a varied collection.
Obviously there are loads of football, but also cover most other sports, music, movies and various others.

I have no interest in reading a 20 year olds autobiography whoever it is, but love reading about a completed or lengthy career.

In the last twelve months or so the best I have read are Mike Tyson, Keith Richards, Alan Sugar and Michael Caine, but I will admit to giving up (very rare for me) on a biography of Marc Bolan as I hated the author's style of writing.

As I am currently writing my own second book, I feel guilty whenever I pick up a book to read and the unread ones probably total a few hundred now.
I look longingly at their spines wishing there were more hours in the day!!

I collected die-cast models of classic British vehicles from the 1950s / 60s / 70s / 80s for a couple of years, as I'm a bit of a nostalgia freak and love anything from those decades; the cars, the clothes, the telly, the grub, the iconic company logos, the music, everything really.

They were the last decades of true, individual style by which each one was easily identifiable. All the decades since just blur into one big haze of nothingness, without anything to distinguish them or set them apart.
Every car nowadays for example looks identical to the next - with the emphasis on reliability and performance over style and panache, and all of them completely forgettable in a trice.

I also built a couple of scenic dioramas for them, which was quite enjoyable - hills, trees, buildings etc - I'm a closet model railway fan at heart, but just don't have the room to build something like that, much as I would like.

Turned out it was just a bit phase really during a time in which I was cheesed off with the footy ruining my weekends every week, and I ended up selling them all again and ploughing the lolly into my footy collection.

If I had the funds and space though, it's something I could definitely develop a wider interest in.

Gaz, I moved to the IOW from Walsall in 1983 and spent 30 years playing darts and pool, mainly in East Wight leagues, I reckon something like half of the pubs I've frequented have either closed or changed to a more restaurant type of premises during this time. One that springs straight to mind is the Lake Superior in Ryde which is long gone, used to have various guest ales and was known as a real ale drinkers establishment, it's flats now, such a shame. The Railway at Ryde has closed and reopened a few times but looks to be struggling. The Fountain that you mention in Sandown closed a good while ago, not only a decent pool venue but the place was rammed on a Friday and Saturday evening prior to everyone piling into the Jolly Sailor & Colonel Bogeys, both of those have gone too!

Back to the thread! A good question as I've probably collected most things down the years, got it from my Dad who was a bit of a hoarder. Old collections included the usual stamps, postcards etc, loads of things recorded on video (what a waste of time that turned out to be) and music memorabilia from my early years as a headbanger!
It appears now that everything I have kept and built on is football related. If I could do it all again I'd specialise instead of my scattergun approach, too late now.
It must be an IOW thing Toby as the only other thing I actively collect is the cardboard Smartie tubes, picked up around 4500 from a skip in Cowes recently!!

Like yourself, Five and ln, tend to be hooked on biographies and autobiographies. Picked up some good signed ones in charity shops. George Best and lngrid Bergmann a couple that spring to mind. One of the best recent reads is ' Never Turn The Other Cheek' by Celtic and Man Unt legend Pat Crerand. Came away from it liking Pat a lot. Probably the only book by a true left wing( politically that is ! ) footballer that l have ever read.Wouldn't like to get on the wrong side of Pat. He tends to knock out more people than Mike Tyson in this book!

Dust and parking tickets.

My other half started collecting Royal Doulton figurines at antique fairs while I rooted through the printed memorabilia stalls. I took a bit of an interest in that for a couple of years but luckily for me they collect dust faster than my press photos.

I collect countries, have around 10 UEFA members left to visit out of the (currently) 55 members.

Does that count? Laughing

As well as my Grantham collection, I also collect general league and cup finals in bulk.

I also collect football history books

My passion as well as football programmes was collecting steam locomotive numbers.I was a trainspotter with my Ian Allan books and my pen and notebook ad as a youngster travelled miles just to be near the railway. A lot of people think that I was very sad but no. It added to my sense of adventure, my independence, an increase in my general knowledge as often the names of the locomotives led you to discover more about them. My football programme collection reminds me of those days. I love the advertising, the social comment, particularly the club jottings and the language that belongs to a bygone age, but is so fondly remembered. I love the references to a very sporting chap, and the fact that we were entertained royally by the opposition, who warmly applauded us for our efforts.

I remember most of them, and a few are still open, Globe in Cowes being one (much changed from when I was a regular there though). Particularly miss the Three Crowns in Cowes, also Rose & Crown and even The Vine in Newport. Still a few decent ones around though, Castle in Newport, King Lud in Ryde, Union in Cowes. Newport Alehouse and Cowes Alehouse are worth a try if you're ever down again. Did you used to go to Fairway Park at all? Sadly I never saw a game there but have managed to pick up a few Sandown programmes over the years.

Ha! It's the tubes that are worth money, but that's by-the-by, as it's the lids I'm after. If you're over in Cowes at all I'll show you why I'm after them... Sherlock

Yup Jimi's last big show - just one other club show in London I believe before he went toes up. Must've been pretty amazing to be there. My folks were on the Island at the time but didn't go to the festival. I've got one of the on-site free-sheet newspapers signed by Joan Baez though, which is a cool piece. Also picked up an original poster for £27 at auction a few years back. Worth ten times that now.

I think a lot of people view committed non-league fans the same way. I've had a great time going to 'proper' grounds to watch matches, but following Cowes to the mainland from age 13 meant that like you my sense of adventure, independence etc was boosted way beyond most of my peers. Great laughs with my pals and plenty of beers (including a few underage ones) along the way too. 120+ grounds, as far east as Herne Bay and Margate, west to Chard and north to North Ferriby. Wouldn't swap all that for any number of trips to segregated bowls with tip-up seats...

Hi yachtsmun,,lsle of Wight 1970 was quite an experience.Sitting on the boat to get to the island was interesting.lt was packed with French anarchists determined to turn it in to a Free Festival, which it was by the Sunday. We paid £3 for a three day weekend ticket. What a rip-off! . With it being a bank holiday , by the time Hendrix appeared on stage ( the early hours of Monday morning) multitudes of fans had departed the scene and you could walk down near to the front of the stage. They probably had to get back to work.We were not going to miss Hendrix for anything. When l hear people now claiming to have seen Hendrix at the lsle of Wight, l do have my doubts. They were probably there ,but didn't stay for the final act. Most people had left. lf you look at the footage of Hendrix 1969 at Woodstock the place is virtually empty, probably because that was also held ( l think) over a bank holiday period. Look what you have turned this Football Forum into!
