Greetings fellow paper addicts ( or 'Addicks if Charlton)

So the time has come....after multiple years of collecting what is probably the fifth or sixth best Argyle collection in the world I have decided to call it a day....

Why...I guess it doesn't really matter why but as I gradually climb the age ladder I don't have anyone that would want it and therefore if it is going to be sold off I decided I would rather do a 21 programmes style "choose some great items to keep and then move on the rest in a leisurely manner" then enjoy the proceeds...although the decline in the value of the Wolves programme made me pause briefly

My tolerant and wonderful better half can indulge some long held desires of home improvement and the kids will get something they want rather than several hundred box files and crates of paper.

It is my third time round and I am as close to getting my collecting ambition realised as I have ever been but equally spend less and less time looking at them....

So I have sent the first invite to my collecting rival and buddy to help him fill the few gaps I can

Next I cordially invite anyone from the forum who has need of a Plymouth home or away to send me a list and we can commence discussions.

The collection consists of

c 100 pre war/wartime programmes /handbooks/postcards/other memorabilia home and away
All bar 11 first league and cup programmes 1945/6 to 2013/14
c1000 reserves youth friendlies and sundry items from 1946 onwards

As I said...I am in no tearing hurry and to be honest the thought of selling these means they will probably get more attention now than they have had for a number of years.

Rest assured ( or perhaps not) I still intend to stick around the forum and I am also gradually listing all the other stuff I have into some semblance of order so it isn't just Plymouth bits ...but obviously that's where the gems such as they are will probably be.

Either Pm me here or at [email protected]. And no I don't really want to play the game of how much for the lot so at this stage it is wants lists only....

Thanks for reading if you got this far....and I hope I can help you fill some gaps.

Peter

I guess it's a sad day then but you are right and one day I'll be doing the same thing. Having said that, with no heirs to leave it all to, nobody will give a #### anyway.

So do you have:-

Anything C Palace-related pre-war

And then all Plymouth v C Palace as follows

FR 26.1.46
a testimonial in 1946/7 - don't know who for or the date
FR 15.12.51

Good luck and get yourself a box of Kleenex
Cheers
Pete

Having been a keen juvenile collector in the 70's my collection waned as wine women and song took hold. With family responsibilities under control I decided to start up again in early 2001.

The bug really took hold. By 2010 I only required 6 known Sheff Weds post war H/A programmes - mostly postponed. I had in excess of 130 war times programmes, 19th century medals, menus. Almost all team sheets from 1997 onwards, newspapers, in fact anything having any relevance to Sheff Weds I simply had to have. I've fretted over a team sheet from tomorrows game and if a mate can get a used ticket if I didn't go then by late 2013 I was saying whats the point. I never even opened the cupboards to look through things anymore.

2014 was the year of uncertainty and then by early 2015 the trigger had been pulled. Certain key items were off loaded to a serious collector and the rest went to Chris Williams at Sportingold. Do I miss it. Not 1 minute.

I visit this forum every day , just to keep my hand in. Very rarely posting. Would I do it any differently. No. I was more than happy for the good stuff to go to a chap who was once my arch rival and competitor and more than happy for Chris to sort everything else out. Happy taking Queenie away for trips now rather than trolling ebay and catalogues for that illusive missing item. Having said all that I have the greatest respect for our friend Leslie and others and their passion

As been discussed many many times before where are all the young collectors coming from? Last one out please turn the light off.

Sad day Peter.
The thought of breaking up my Spurs collection is not something I ever expect to do, but my son is a Gooner, so expect a huge bonfire when I go.

I have an avid Plymouth supporter's wants list and will send it through to you when I find it. It may be the two of you can fill the few remaining gaps in his collection and I am happy to put you in touch to sort it out. (You may already know each other).

Good luck with it all.

Paul

I sold my Leicester programme collection a few years ago now, but still have kept a few back like F A Cup Finals, UEFA Cup game in Vienna v Red Star. I now only concentrate on LCFC specials etc. I eventually branched out into collecting Leicester City memorabilia inc handbooks, menus, badges etc as their are not so many to collect and are easier to store.

Sorry to hear the news Peter, must be a retch coming to the decision. My only advice would be to take a step back and consider if you are doing the right thing - would hate you to turn around in the new year and have regrets about getting rid of your collection.

From my own point of view I have two teenage sons who have shown little or no interest in football let alone my collection. They have however, been told not just to bin the lot should my demise be sudden! You never know i may have grandchildren in the future to hand the collection on to.

Having said the above I would be interest in the following items if you have them available.
Plymouth v Wolves - 2nd Feb 1946
Plymouth v Wolves (FAC) - 7th Jan 1950
Plymouth v Wolves (FAC) 6th Jan 1951

Regards
Mike

Good luck with your Plymouth collection.

Its a job I also will have to face soon.......

I hope you get great offers for old, valuable programmes as we know the modern issues go for a song.

Thanks for all the kind messages and emails

Rest assured I have no regrets at the decision and always knew it would happen...so I decided now was the time so I didn't have to do a fire sale...

I will try and get through all replies asap....I am going to get them all together so I give everyone a decent chance ( as that will be the best value for me I hope)

The good news I guess is that you will have one less Argyle collector pushing prices up Smile

At least from the volume of replies I know there is still a market out there Smile

Peter

A big decision - good luck with finding good homes for the prized items.

I was interested to read that you know where your collection ranks amongst other Argyle collectors.
Do most collectors have a good idea of in whose hands the biggest/most extensive collections are, for their club?

For Arsenal collections I am guessing it is Len Evans or Martin Levy?

I don't know for sure but I would think the following have better Argyle collections

Colin Parsons. Mike Rundle, Don Smith John Trelevan and Russell Moult(??) ..and there could well be a couple of others so it was a littletongue in cheek

Its an annoyingly well collected club Smile

Any pre-1989 tickets vs. Newport in your collection Peter?

I have several from '79 to '85, but would buy any I don't already have mate - even the same games if they were different colours to what I have.

I had heard that there is not much else to do in Plymouth - pasties and programmes.

Always a sad day when a big collection has to find a new home, but if it helps other collectors to fill their gaps then this is what keeps our wonderful hobby going.
As others have said, we will all face the same problem one day. Mine will hopefully end up at Pompey's club museum, which will be built into the new stand in the future.
We have a small history group at the club which is actively collecting items of memorabilia to display in the future.
If you have any PA v pompey items pre war or reserve / youth going then let me know.
Peter, good luck with your collecting retirement. Chris Gibbs.
