Whilst Blackpool and Tottenham were sparring for a place in the FA Cup Final, so were Derby and Manchester United.

The official programme and one of the pirate issues.

60,000 in attendance to see a 3-1 win for United.

I don't have that programme so will have to settle for the following!

1970/1, 45 years ago...

Blackpool 1 Leeds United 1

Att. 27,401

Peter Lorimer in his 4th of a five match scoring spree netting our goal

I know they're worthless but this era is probably my favourite for programmes, particularly if they include, as this one does, the Football League Review. It may well be because 70/1 was the first season I bought a programme at a game

14th March 1981

Football League, Division I

Att: 16,748

Crystal Palace 0, Sunderland 1

No Palace players worthy of inclusion, so here's a Sunderland stalwart at No 5 in this game - Shaun Elliott

Having shown the 1st match a few day’s ago, here is the FA Cup semi-final replay between Blackpool and Birmingham City played at Goodison Park 65 years ago.

Blackpool won 2-1 to take them to Wembley for the second time since the war, with Mortensen and Perry scoring for the Seasiders, and Smith replying for Birmingham.

The attendance was a little over 70,000.

The programme is 12 pages, full of reading and like the first programme, containing photos of both teams.

One year ago and a 1-0 defeat away to Ebbsfleet United in Conference South. Ebbsfleet finished 8th, Maidenhead 18th. The Kent club are setting the pace this season and lead the division by ten points helped, no doubt, by a weekly playing budget reputedly in excess of £20,000 per week*. The programme wouldn't have looked out of place in League 1 or 2 with an exceptional amount of information on the visiting team.

*which is exceptionally high for a step 2 club.

52 years ago, 14th March 1964

Middlesbrough 1 Leeds United 3

Att. 15,986 or 15,987 (Don't suppose it really matters!)

Division 2 title season for Leeds. Middlesbrough had a 19 year old Cyril Knowles in their line-up, their goal being scored by Horsfield. Leeds United's three being scored by Lawson, Peacock & Giles

15th March 1975

Football League, Division III

Att: 15,043

Crystal Palace 1 (Taylor), Huddersfield Town 1

In the last minute Dave Swindlehurst forces the ball past keeper Taylor but there's No 10 Belfitt to clear it away and restrict Palace to a point, a precious one for the Terriers who eventually finished last and were relegated while Palace ended in 5th.

77 years ago (1938/9 season) and a 1st Division fixture between Chelsea and Blackpool.

The programme is an 8 page issue with plenty of content.

The match ended 1-1 with Dodds getting the Blackpool goal.

1969 and a 4-2 victory away to Berwick Rangers, Stenhousemuir's only away win in the league that season. They finished bottom, Berwick Rangers came 16th. Professionally printed black and white programme with an aerial groundview of Shielfield Park on the cover.

69 years ago and value for money at the Baseball Ground.

Derby 4 (Broome 2, Carter, Antonion)
Man Utd 3

Surprisingly low attendance of 19,679.

Something happened to Derby's attendances halfway through that season. Gates were averaging around the 28,000 mark until early February when they (as the Cup holders) were knocked out by Liverpool. In a thrice, gates dropped below 20,000 for the rest of the season.

Wasn't the league form - that was patchy at best throughout the season.

Nope, answer is simple...back then, the Cup mattered.

Derby1884, bad crowds in early 1947 may have been weather-related. My dad always said it was worse than the winter of 1963.

Tues 16th March 1976

Football League, Division III

Att: 22,213

Crystal Palace 2 (Taylor, Swindlehurst), Preston North End 0

Palace keeper Paul Hammond, en ever-present after missing the first 3 games of that season (57 games long). Top keeper who left Palace for Tampa Bay Rowdies, never to return, a year later after 142 games.

48 years ago (1967/8 season) and a 2nd Division fixture between Blackpool and Aston Villa.

This was Blackpool’s first season in the second tier since the war and they narrowly missed going straight back up on goal difference.

They won this one 1-0 with Gordon Milne scoring the solitary goal.

The programme is a neat 12 page issue which had the League Review stapled in the centre.

40 years ago today - Joe Butler's testimonial game after 10 years of service at the County Ground.

I have two copies of the brochure issued on the night - on this one, someone has kindly (?) affixed the actual lineups as per formation rather than by shirt number.

The single sheet insert was only issued on the night of the game.

Swindon won 2-1.

Butler played for Swindon between 1965 and 1976 before seeing out his time with Witney Town.

17th March 1956

Football League, Division III (South)

Att: 6,826

Exeter City 6 (six), Crystal Palace 1 (Deakin)

As Palace lost 7-0 at this venue 2 seasons earlier, this could be considered an improvement! Here's Palace's sole scorer, Mike Deakin

60 years ago (1955/6 season) and a top of the table 1st Division fixture between Blackpool and Newcastle United.

Blackpool were in 2nd place with Newcastle in 4th and the Seasiders won comfortably by 5 goals to 1 with goals from Taylor, Mudie 2, Perry and Durie.

The programme is a standard 8 page issue, short on content but with recent Lancashire League and Fylde District League fixtures and results which is invaluable information for research purposes.

17th March 1962

Division 2

Southampton 4 Leeds United 1 (Lawson)

Att. 11,924

Great cover from Saints for this era, the player on the front however always reminds me of a young Peter Bonetti
