10th March 1945
Football League Cup - South
Att: 20,690
Chelsea 2 (Spence, Wardle), Crystal Palace 0
L.A.C. Hudgell, A.
Arthur Hudgell was a superb full back who, after only 25 league appearances for Palace was signed by Sunderland in 1947 for £10,000, then a record fee for a full back and also I believe for a Div III South player (although I may be corrected on that). He went on to play over 250 league games for the Wearsiders in the top flight. |

65 years ago (1950/1 season) and an FA Cup semi-final between Birmingham City and Blackpool.
The programme is a 16 page issue with plenty of content and team photos of both teams.
The match was played at Manchester City’s Maine Road stadium with 73,000 in attendance.
The game ended 0-0 and Blackpool won the replay 4 days later at Goodison Park.

Can't resist posting another programme from today even though it was shown previously a couple of years ago.
This is from 1928/9 season and is a 2nd Division fixture between Blackpool and Hull City.
Blackpool home programmes from the 1920s or earlier are extremely rare and this one being in excellent condition has to be one of my top programmes.
It is a 12 page issue with a fair bit of reading, fixtures and league tables including the Northern Mid-Week Football League. There are also plenty of interesting adverts.
Blackpool won the match 2-1 with goals from Oxberry and Downes.

Season 53/4 saw a number of Scottish clubs visit the Baseball Ground to experience floodlit football
The novelty was already wearing a bit thin, though, as only 5,029 were in attendance.
Score was 3-1...not 3-0.

Curious photograph.
-is it the way I'm looking at the photo or is the hooligan laughing here?
-the inference is this wasn't at the Victoria Ground. Does the programme mention where it happened?
-note the hooligan's left foot. It is rectangular. Very disconcerting!
I was reminiscing with someone over football in the 70s today and the 101 ways in which it was better then than now. Bar one way. The hooligans. |
Agreed Steve, very curious and not something I've noticed in a programme before (cue hundreds of examples!)
It does not say what ground the photo was taken on but as you say does infer it's not at Stoke. When zooming in on my phone it looks like the arrested party is grimacing and perhaps snarling at opposition supporters. Perhaps someone on the forum can identify the ground from the small clues on offer?
The rectangular foot, is that not a Derby thing?
I may not be able to help on the above but I can offer an insight into a possible reason for the success of Leeds United during the Revie era. It comes in the form of the following programme....
10th March 1973
Leeds United 2 Everton 1
att. 39,663
Leeds goals from Sniffer Clarke & Lasher Lorimer but take a look at who is missing from the Leeds line-up and is running the line instead
10th March 1962
London Charity Cup Semi-Final
Barking v Barnet
Other details unknown

...well, mine certainly was when that police horse's hoof stood on my foot after the game against Cardiff 82/3! They must be trained to do so.
Leeds goals from Sniffer Clarke & Lasher Lorimer but take a look at who is missing from the Leeds line-up and is running the line instead
I knew Don Revie got away with a lot back then - but that's taking the biscuit!
Is that why Everton had 5 goals disallowed for offside that day?

Interesting one this - President, are you watching...?
11th March 1950 - Winchester City v Cowes
Result not known at present, but may have been helped by the fact the ref was George Reader, who scored 318 goals in 319 games for Cowes during the twenties and thirties.
Four months later Reader refereed the de-facto World Cup Final between Uruguay and Brazil in front of over 200,000 at the Maracana. In later life he was a director and chairman of Southampton.

72 years ago (1943/4 season) and a War Cup 1st Rd 2nd leg tie between Everton and Blackpool.
This match also counted towards the Northern Section 2nd Competition.
The programme is just a single sheet showing the team line ups on the front and blank on the reverse.
Blackpool won 3-1 with 2 goals from Mortensen and one from Dix. This made the aggregate score 10-2.

Well, no matter how often I count the figures on the pitch here, I make it 24.
Two teams plus the referee makes 23.
Early pitch invader?

pictured sporting the classic sash away kit a full three years before Crystal Palace adopted it Thumbs Up )
Thanks Yachty and a nice photo of your trend-setting goal machine in 1975.
However, Palace "adopted" this kit for the FA Cup run of 1975/6 (see March 6th feature) and then full time in 1976/7 season.
Prior to that Manchester City (also under Malcolm Allison) used a sash away kit in 1972/3.
And prior to that Peru used a sash kit in the 1970 World Cup.
On the subject of sash kits, this season's Birmingham City and Hartlepool United kits look really smart too. Nice to see clubs upholding this fashionable trend. |
Here's another from 1971/2
Something a bit different for my 11th March offering and only going back 19 years........
11th March 1997
Tranmere Rovers 0 Leeds United 1
FA Youth Cup 5th Round replay - Leeds would go on to win the FA Youth Cup
Rather than being the programme for the tie this is the teamsheet but I quite like the style of it

Nice sash, Ruud.
12th March 1938
Football League, Division III (South)
Att: 6,300
Southend United 2 (Martin, Oswald), Crystal Palace 2 (Blackman, Smith)
Centre half and club captain George Walker, who, when a St Mirren player in the early 30's, played 4 times for Scotland.

68 years ago (1947/8 season) and an FA Cup semi-final between Blackpool and Tottenham Hotspur played at Villa Park.
This was Blackpool’s first FA Cup semi-final which they won 3-1 after extra time.
Mortensen scored all 3 and the attendance was around the 70,000 mark although I have seen it recorded as 65,000 in some publications.
The programme is 8 pages, without adverts, and includes full page photos of both teams.
