8th March 1952

Football League, Division III South

Att: 10,352

Ipswich Town 1 (McCrory), Crystal Palace 1 (McGeachie)

To my shame, no photos of George McGeachie, who played all 47 games for Palace in 1951/2 and promptly joined Wigan Athletic in the summer.

8th March 1975 - Hampshire League Div. 2

AFC Totton 1 - 1 Cowes (Hambley)

A useful point for Cowes en-route to the Hants Lge Div. 2 title. Roy Hambley scored, one of a run of 17 goals in 12 games (33 for the season overall).

Roy Hambley (pictured sporting the classic sash away kit a full three years before Crystal Palace adopted it Thumbs Up )

Thanks Yachty and a nice photo of your trend-setting goal machine in 1975.

However, Palace "adopted" this kit for the FA Cup run of 1975/6 (see March 6th feature) and then full time in 1976/7 season.

Prior to that Manchester City (also under Malcolm Allison) used a sash away kit in 1972/3.

And prior to that Peru used a sash kit in the 1970 World Cup.

On the subject of sash kits, this season's Birmingham City and Hartlepool United kits look really smart too. Nice to see clubs upholding this fashionable trend.

62 years ago (1953/4) and a Lancashire Senior Cup 2nd Rd match between Accrington Stanley and Blackpool.

The programme is a very good 16 page issue but doesn’t have a date or clear indication as to what the nature of the fixture is until you read the club notes.

Accrington played a number of floodlight friendlies around this time and the programme is sometimes shown in catalogues and on the internet as a friendly.

To compound matters, the game ended in a draw, and the replay which was also played under floodlights at Accrington a week later, had another similar 16 page programme issued.

There is often much confusion about these 2 programmes.

Blackpool went on to win the Lancashire Senior Cup that year defeating Liverpool in the final after another replay.

That photo's from 1973 Smile - classic beardie striker.

But it was just a tongue-in-cheek smirk at Allison's 'innovation' at Palace - I forgot he'd earlier done the same at City.

Sash kits look ace - Southampton used to wear one a hundred-odd years ago - a kit they briefly reprised a couple of years back which was way more stylee than their standard ones. The Palace one was also a classic.

8th March 1969

Stoke City 1 Leeds United 5 - Div1

Att. 24,327

Leeds swept aside Stoke on their way to the League title. Despite bowing out early in the domestic cup competitions they had remained unbeaten for 18 games leading up to this match following a 5-1 loss at Burnley in October 1968 - They gained revenge for this by beating them 6-1 at Elland Road just two months later. This unbeaten league run would continue all the way through until mid-September when they lost 3-0....at Stoke!

Close, Ruud, but no cigar. The scorer of the winning goal at Elland Road was Steve Lovell

Excellent photo's once again Pete, thank you

9th March 1946

Division III South (South Region) - League Cup Qualifying Competition

Att: 12,000 (est)

Crystal Palace (2) 2 (Kurz, Lievesley), Norwich City (0) 3 (Furness, Russell, Jones)

2 up at half time, lost 3-2 - who better to show than Palace keeper Dick Graham who probably fielded a few unsavoury verbals on that afternoon.

Not the sash, but another lovely Palace kit......however as a 10 year old Spurs fan opening a present from his nan, I was far from impressed to see this shirt. Her reasoning as I recall was "it looked nicer than the plain white one"

70 years ago (1945/6 season) and a Football League North fixture between Middlesbrough and Blackpool.

This was the 4th meeting of the season between the two clubs and they still had another game in a week's time.

The programme is a 4 page issue with team line ups and a half time scoreboard inside and notes and fixtures on the reverse.

Middlesbrough won 4-2 with Dodds and O’Donnell H. scoring for the Seasiders.

What a discerning lady! One question though - what did you do with that shirt?

I wore it for PE classes only as it meant I kept my Spurs shirts clean!
It would be worth a few quid if I still had it!

Brentford v Chelsea - 9 March 1938 - Griffin Park

Result: 1-1. att. 20401. Idris Hopkins scored the Bees goal.

The standard Brentford programme and the team page.

A Brentford FC postcard of the 1937-38 squad.

Probably our best ever squad and our best ever season with regards finishing 6th in Div 1 (Brentford did finish 5th two years previous) and also making the QF of the FA Cup. Brentford were top of Div 1 for quite some time too. Smile

Never seen my team's name abbreviated like that anywhere else. Hmmm - due care is required with the pronunciation...

Carlisle 1
Drby C'nty 3 (Brown 2, Woodhead)

Curious photograph.

-is it the way I'm looking at the photo or is the hooligan laughing here?

-the inference is this wasn't at the Victoria Ground. Does the programme mention where it happened?

-note the hooligan's left foot. It is rectangular. Very disconcerting!

I was reminiscing with someone over football in the 70s today and the 101 ways in which it was better then than now. Bar one way. The hooligans.
