18th March 1950 - Hants v Dorset at Church Litten, Newport
Looks like a 2-2 draw from the annotation.

77 years ago (1938/9 season) and a 1st Division fixture between Blackpool and Bolton Wanderers.
The programme is a 20 page issue with a great cover showing a montage of match action scenes. There is plenty of reading and statistics along with a fair few adverts.
The match ended in a goalless draw in front of about 19,000 spectators.

Nice programme, love that cover
Loved that issue. Had to sell my Blackpool v bees issue from that period, 1938/39, about 20 years ago. Regret it, but had to be done to keep the bad men away! _________________ Not Forgotten; Allwright, Greechan, Hagan, Kennedy, Littler, Purver, Robotham, Saunders, Shields |

Not much to add on this one, except I'm guessing Portsmouth won as I have a few single sheet programmes from the Island's run, and the final's not amongst them. The first game, a week earlier, was played at Fratton Park, which must have been quite a thrill for the Island Boys given Pompey's Division 1 dominance at the time.

A couple from the same day in 1966
Did all Sheffield Wednesday programmes for that season have World Cup Willie on the front cover?

Sorry for posting out of sequence, but since RVD likes the replay, here's the original match at Fratton Park a week earlier.

20th March 1948
Football League, Division III (South)
Att: 30,558
Notts County 1 (Lyman), Crystal Palace 0
Interesting comment on the back page - this issue was 8pp size 7.5x5".
Amazing gate for this fixture between County (then 12th) and Palace (16th). Maybe it was down to this chap, signed in November and scorer of 18 goals in 19 games in that season - Tommy Lawton. Gates like that would have paid his wages, I expect.

Goals shared around very evenly amongst the forwards.
Derby 5 (Crooks, Napier, Duncan, Astley, Dix)
Charlton 0
att: 21,110
One for Ruud - this advert on page 15 lets you know where one of your pre-war players ended up!

21st March 1955
Floodlit Friendly
Att: 4,342
Crystal Palace 1 (Tilston), Rotherham United 2 (Churms, Grainger)
Note - back then Palace always advertised forthcoming games on their front covers.
The inside showing match details lovingly recorded, along with obligatory punched hole.
2 of these players appeared in this game: Jack Edwards (centre) and Archie Andrews (right). Harry McDonald missed out. Scorer Tommy Tilston can be seen in the background, far left.

After seeing the Dons beaten on Saturday Bob, it would seem MM conjured a miracle for his team who were on their death-beds the day before.
I know what you meant though.

63 years ago (1952/3 season) and an FA Cup semi-final between Tottenham Hotspur and Blackpool.
This was Blackpool’s third semi-final since the war and the third victory with a keenly contested 2-1 win.
The match was played at Villa Park in front of 68,000 spectators with Perry and Mudie scoring for the Seasider’s and Duquemin scoring for Spurs.
The programme is 8 pages and is similar to the 1948 semi-final with pen pictures and team photos of both teams.

Aberdeen 3-0 Ujpest Doza. After a 2-0 defeat in the first leg, modern day dream wrecker, 9-0 enthusiast and all round awful manager Mark McGhee scored a hat-rick to complete a glorious comeback. A good few years before my time but still a cracker to watch on Youtube. |
I was there - in that wee offshoot of the main stand to the right of the Beach End.
Damned fine view one got from that vantage point! _________________ http://www.flickr.com/photos/derby1884/sets/ |

Given the importance of the occasion, it's a pity the cover featured a Derby player impersonating a teapot!
I travelled down for this one with a very good mate of mine (now sadly deceased) who had "no time for English football" but came away converted to what I told him about the special atmos at the BBG.
We all received a certificate to fill in, send back to the club and receive a memento that we "were there" that day.
At half time, new owner Lionel Pickering received a rousing reception - partly down to his popularity, partly due to the fact he wasn't Robert Maxwell!
The score?
Wolves won 3-2.....I think we had been 2-0 up at one point....and we were bossing the game until Steve Bull got inspired and Rams keeper Martin Taylor suffered several crises of confidence. He couldn't even catch a cross. I still don't know what happened to him that day.
Anyway, especially poignant for me as I never did make it back to the Baseball Ground after that.
If I'd known its lifespan was so limited, I would have.
But we get older, work takes over, travel costs increase etc etc.
I'd pay twice that now, though, to visit the best ground in Britain just once more
