London Combination
Chelsea v Crystal Palace
No 13 Frank McMenemy with free rusty pin-holes
If anyone knows the score & scorers I'd love to know, please. |
Hi Pete
Below copy of report of the game, seems the reporter was in the bar and missed who scored the goal. Sorry who scored still remains a mystery
Frank McMenemy
A rust, pin hole free but with a very legible signature (players could write in those days)

The attendance was 31,111.

I know "The Ram" gets a lot of brickbats from collectors but Harry was no "yes man" and, at times, especially in the early 80s, he'd write articles that would have today's corporate types in the posh seats puce with rage at his overt criticism of club affairs.
And he'd always take the time to reply to long-distance fans _________________ http://www.flickr.com/photos/derby1884/sets/ |

The same time Arsenal and Blackpool were playing, Derby were at Anfield in a 5th round FA Cup tie.
44,493 saw the home team knock the Cup holders out, 1-0.
8 page programme issued includes a request from the Board of Directors for boys to stop throwing oranges on to the pitch during the game.
Oranges? I thought rationing was still in place....
Sorry about the punched holes. I've just noticed them. Wasn't me, I promise.

Not a good day for the Bees in 1964.
Luton came to Griffin Park and gave Brentford a lesson!
Brentford 2 Luton 6
Brentford led at half-time one nil too!!
Brentford still finished above the Hatters though!

Certainly called a spade a spade. Did you have contact with him then Steve?
Would like to know the later life details of Harry Brown and Bob Baldwin if anyone knows? _________________ For a daily feed of football nostalgia please click on the link to view my Twitter page on your PC - https://twitter.com/MemorabiliaMal |

9th February 1960 (10.2 update - just discovered this game was played on 9th February 1961 as Guildford's semi-final v Woking had to be replayed which didn't happen till November 1960!).
Surrey Invitation Cup - Final
Att: 2,659
Guildford City 0, Crystal Palace 3 (Noakes, Kerrins 2)
The Surrey Invitation Cup ran for 2 seasons only, with Div IV Palace winning it both times. In this, the second season, Palace beat Dulwich Hamlet 8-1 and Guildford beat Woking 5-1 to set up this final. And that was the end of the competition (edit - or at least, Palace in the competition).
Palace's team included 1st teamers Johnny Byrne, Dennis Uphill, Ron Heckman, Vic Rouse, Terry Long, George Petchey, Gwyn Evans and goalscorer Alfie Noakes, shown here

1945-46 - Fifth Round of the FA Cup - 1st Leg. Yes, two legged FA Cup ties back in 1945-46.
Brentford won 3-1, McAloon, Durrant and Hopkins.
Brentford drew the home leg five days later with QPR, 0-0, and progressed to the quarter finals to face Charlton (who battered the Bees 9-4 over two legs) Charlton reached the final but were beaten by Derby Co.

64 years ago (1951/2 season) and a 1st Division fixture between Manchester City and Blackpool.
The programme is an 8 page issue with very small print and includes fixtures and a league table for the Manchester League whose games were played at Hatters Park Ground in Denton.
The match ended 0-0 and the attendance was 47,528.

9th February 1972
Leeds United 2 Liverpool 0 - FA Cup 4th Round Replay
Originally planned as a 7.30pm kick-off but brought forward to 2.30pm due to the miners strike. Still attracted a large crowd of 45,821 on a Wednesday afternoon, I assume the crowd was mostly made up of striking miners! Two goals from Allan Clarke saw Leeds through.
Good entertainment for a quid
Makes me think that when ticket prices went up to £2 did fans stage a walk-out in the second minute?

or complimentary tickets you just didn't bother
I'm in the fortunate bracket of fans who support a club in the Prem whose ticket policiy is affordable to me at this time!
My avatar which I was involved in suggests what I feel in the bigger picture!
It has to stop sometime or it will be a watch on t.v. event. The premiership will implode because of too many people wanting their slice of what's avaible monetary wise. |

I often used to write to Harry.
Sent him a quiz once on the history of the club. Lo and behold, a few weeks later, it took centre stage in the 81/2 home v Blackburn Rovers (much to my surprise!).
He even arranged for everyone at the Baseball Ground to have a bash at it and a wee prize for the supporter who managed to send in the most correct answers.
He didn't have to do that, but that was Harry for you.
No way that would be allowed to happen today what with us aspiring to be up there with the big boys.....I mean, it would take up space that the corporate sponsors see as theirs! _________________ http://www.flickr.com/photos/derby1884/sets/ |

Best keep this image well away from Mel Morris and his corporate sponsors.
Third Division (North), Feb 9th, 1957.
Halifax Town 1
Derby County 0
att: 8,535
...and we didn't sack the manager.
